I've never owned one but I've always thought a 944 Turbo was a pretty nice car - I don't get the comment...

My guess?
a 944 turbo and a supra turbo have many things in common and so do many of their owners. There is a big aftermarket of parts to increase power and boost for both cars. There are lots of supra owners out there who are enthusiasts and who would be more than willing to tell you all the things they bolted onto their supra to increase boost and make it go faster. Sometimes people just need to vent, I guess. BTW....I LOVE You Tube for tutorials on how to do repairs.....excellent resource. And that includes the 'comments' section too! Ultimately we're all in this together. Why not help each other?

There's customer service, and then there's trying to get someone to do automotive mechanic-type labor for free. It's one thing to ask for some advice at the counter, or to spend time looking up on the computer the right parts/applications for stuff. It's another thing to essentially ask the parts counter guy to find you the right blinker light bulb (or battery, or air filter, or wiper blades) and install it for you when there's a line of customers behind you. These people are perfectly able to pay a mechanic. They're not destitute. But they just are too cheap to do so (or too lazy to figure out how to do it themselves).

a turbo was in the need for speed (2013): ![]() a regular 944 was in sixteen candles: ![]() most recently the 944 is the "hero car" in halt and catch fire: ![]() meanwhile the 911 is most often cast as "the *******s car" such as bachelor party: ![]() bridesmaids: ![]() bad boys 2: ![]() but that really is neither here nor there. just fact checking your "porsche 944s arn't in movies" claim. still not getting why there is any comparison at all between my 944 turbo, and some 19 year old's story of a mythical hyper modded 90s junker. when in reality the car was probably a 1990s v6 camaro. i don't care, even if the car was real, i just want my hose clamps or brake fluid, i dont want to talk to the autoparts store guy about his friends friends brothers "insane" car that would accelerate so fast you couldn't lean forward and touch the dash. i dont care, just take my money so i can leave. Maybe some stores should have an express line, in addition to the regular checkout line. (I thought of this while standing in line in the post office.)
In the express line, your entire transaction must be completed in 120 seconds. There's a clock that ticks down the moment you step to the counter. You know what you want. All the forms/labels are filled out beforehand. The package is taped up and ready to go. You just tell 'em what you want, they weigh it, and you pay it. Done. If your transaction isn't done by the end of 120 seconds, you get bounced to the end of the regular line. No exceptions. If you're not sure if you can get it all done in 2 minutes, if you need to ask multiple questions, if you need help filling out forms and labels, that's all fine--just get into the regular line.

Our AAA office now has an express line for DMV transactions only.
I was also able to pay our membership fee as well. Really nice not having to wait for half an hour till my name was called.

If you want to buy parts with little to no personal interaction - buy with electronic forms and have it arrive at your place!
Stores and sales people are there to offfer...SERVICE!!!! Consider most of the parts stores local to me, will take a computer out and check for codes the engine is giving and give you a print out... Ultimately, you want two guys in the store, so when a line forms, one can check out those that know what they need, and the other can have those who need help wait.

I really hate autoparts stores because they never have quite what im looking for. It is insult to injury that I KNOW something workable is behind the counter in one of the stocked parts boxes if they would let me look through them.
I have no problem with them helping people though. THat is the point of the store. Otherwise we would all just use Rock auto for daily drivers and Pelican for our hobby cars. In other news, I generally only use pelican and rock auto .

Of course with proper technique and politeness, a counter person could answer the questions and keep the line moving. I worked in a paint store as a young man and would regularly run two registers and ask folks if it was okay if I rang up another person while I was answering the questions. The person who doesn't have to wait is okay without your undivided attention and the person with the question realizes they're holding up the show and don't mind a few interruptions. Everyone gets what they need in a quick fashion keeping "most" people happy.

Made a long list of parts to go with the car, went to Baxter to get what they have, then order the rest from Pelican. The counter guy asked to see my list, disappeared back in the warehouse area, and started bringing parts to the counter. Disappeared again, came back with more parts. Again. Though Porsche made the 912E for only one year, they had everything on the list! Sure, lots of stuff cross-references to VW or 911 parts, but they took the time to locate everything. I won't step into a Pep Boys. I will go out of my way if necessary to use Baxter. |

If you are waiting on line you better know what you want before it's your turn cause you'll lose your turn in a NY minute. Oh, and have your wallet out before they tell you how much it costs. In fact since the prices are listed have more than you think it will cost ready and for god's sake do not go digging for exact change.

+1 for Baxter. They are a bit pricey, but really go out of their way.

I don't like the pep boys near me. Dumpy inside and lots of unrelated junk in there. Same with the Goodyear franchise.
Advance auto is my usual stop. Not the most knowledgable people but less likely to be rude vs napa. |
