I had a '70. Awesome little car, would go anywhere. But the PA winters took their toll. I stopped driving it when the battery sunk through the floor. That's when I bought my first 911.

You can use early 944 Susp & brakes on a Super, remember, the front susp for the 924/944 series came from the Super. If you are looking for a simple beater, that is inexpensive to play with, I say go for it. Teach your Wife & kids how to drive and to watch out for the idiots who drive newer, safer cars & tend not to pay attention to the world around them. I'm sure many of us had early VW, yet we somehow survived. Sure, the earlier Bugs & Gias are more desirable, but that not only makes them more $$$ but less likely to be enjoyed as a beater.

Zackly... I don't want a "classic" that I would worry about... heck even my 944 was a beater... I would park it out in front of the pizza parlor (where I could keep an eye on it) with the windows down... freaked my friends out "IT'S A PORSCHE!"

I personally don't like them but I generally don't like modern cars.
That is probably the direction we will go, we even test drove one and I rather liked it. {even dated a lady that owned one before I met my wife...shhhhh} Nice cars but there is something about the simplicity of the old air cooled bugs... I wouldn't think twice about attempting a clutch or valve adjustment on an old airhead.

Pretty sure I could swap an engine in air cooler quicker than a headlight in a water cooled bug. Seriously.

No way in hell would I own a water cooled VW product again.

When I was younger, I could get an engine out of a beetle in very little time, with a floor jack, a bottle jack and a skateboard as an engine dolly. 4 bolts, a couple electrical connections, fuel line, and you're good to go .

And valve adjustments are a piece of cake - heck the valve covers aren't even bolted on, you just need a screwdriver to pop the wire clip off. You gotta love the simplicity of non-injected beetles.

I'm not a lefty.

Please learn to read. I have a P car, and according to your signature, you do not. What are you doing her, politics Hmmmmm..., Troll Hmmmm...

I know some here don't consider a 944, or water cooled Porsche a Porsche, what ever.

I come her for knowledge and some entertainment. There are a few people left on this site that provided that, you do not. So you are now on ignore. There was no reason for your childish attack. Done with you.

I have had over 30 different cars, none were Chevrolets or Japanese. Only American and German.

You are wrong on all counts.
Over and out.

Sorry I got trolled on your thread Scottmandue, just thought I would give some though towards your Wife's safety. I ride a motorcycle so I understand the risk vs fun thing. My wife also rides, I tried to talk her out of it, but she was willing to take the risk also. We do have a good time riding together.

the later ones (post 69) are inferior. Triple track seats, shock absorber bumpers, an awful fuel delivery system, strut front ends...I could go on... 68 and 69 were the best years.

Thanks for this thread. I really need to scout out a bug out west and bring it home. The real trick would be to get one that would make it home under its own power.

I would start searching craigslist around Charlotte North Carolina and go down the coast towards Atlanta. All the good cars seem to be in Atlanta. There is an option where you can switch cities using the same search term. I have seen a few good looking bugs listed in the last few weeks too while I have been searching for Type 2 buses and campers.

I'm supposed to help sell my mother in law's '70 or '71 beetle cabriolet in the near future. It'll make it from VA to MD!

It's a fun car. I've enjoyed cruising around the Shenandoah Valley in it a few times. I don't have any pics of the car but it's similar to this one:

I know you are trying to be negative but there is an upside to your statement, I would be free from having to do any work on her car.

And yes, I remember pulling the engine on my brothers 58' he would get it all disconnected and then call me out to the driveway where we would each grab a side of the manifold and pluck it out.

I'm not trying to be negative. I'm telling you that the water cooled VWs are unreliable POSs. My mom had two post 2000 tdis and both of them had CELs that wouldn't go away. One was bought brand new even!
