Tail of the Dragon...where to stay?

I'm in the middle part of NC, so the trip would probably take over 5 hrs to get there. I've not done a road trip yet, and would hate to miss one you good folks have recommended that's right in my backyard.

Has anyone made the trip and could recommend a nice place to stay?

It's kinda funny, I've lived in NC all my life, and around here you are either a mountain person or a beach person....we hit the beach every few weekends year-round so I know nothing about our mountains

Thanks for any info!

Fontana Village Resort is where a rather large group of Pelican forum members stayed when we had an excursion several years back.

Depends on the time year, what direction you want to drive it, who is with you, etc.

My sister has a mountain house in Brevard, NC about an hour and a half from the Dragon. I have come to really enjoy Brevard, a neat little college town with lots of festivals, etc.

The Dragon will be very crowded at certain times and times of the year...a late spring weekend drive would be disastrous. There are better drives in the area in my opinion.

Fontana works. It's at the end of another good drive. We've stayed in Robbinsville a couple times, decent amount of stuff there for food/bev, there was a Microtel and one other chain hotel in town. Other end of 129 your probably closer to Knoxville and should be able to find all you'd want up there.

What time of year would you recommend to avoid the (mega) crowds? We are good for anytime.

It would just be my wife and I, leaving the kids at home

I have no idea about the direction??

Fontana looks great...

When I drove out to Charleston from OKC it was all day on I-40 the first day. I stayed in Maryville, TN at a nice enough Hampton Inn.

The next morning was just a few minutes to get to the fun driving. I spent the entire day getting to Charlotte, NC from Maryville. I just kept finding fun roads.

Now...?

You going during the week or weekend? Weekend's will be heavier traveled. The most interesting/twisty part is from where 115/129 come together in TN down to where 28 connects in just across the NC border. You'd take 28 over to Fontana, or follow 129 down past the lake into Robbinsville.

1985 Carrera. Grand Prix white, Burgundy leather interior.

Those are the OEM from the factory 15 inch wheels 7s & 8s. I just need to find some tires that will fit those wheels. It is a real challenge to find anything that fits except minivan S rated tires or the original size skinny tires.

Glen - I'm running Kumho Ecsta's on my stock 85. Ran on them up at Mid-Ohio, very nice well balanced rubber. Tire Rack IIRC.

On a 15 inch wheel? What size of tires? The 195-65 front & 215 60 15 rear?

Oops...my mistake, mine are 16. I need to pay more attention to the written word. Sorry about that...

Regardless I'm 99% sure you can get some pretty fat rubber for the 15" wheel. Check out Tire Rack and see what's there.

I spent several days looking for tires with no luck except some tread-wear 800 tires or some Pirelli P6000 195-65 and 215-60. Right now I have 205 & 225s.
