There is a bunch of stuff on the CARB site about just plugging into the ODBII port on newer cars, mainly it saves time and the little bit of bad stuff into the air from the rolling tests that were run before. There is a chart that equates ODBII sensors to what was "sniffed" when rolling so they figure the state will make more $$$$$ in the end. I had my 2007 Chevy smog tested back in April and all the guy did was plug in his reader but it sent the info to the state immediately it seems?

Mr Rickman is heavily involved in our local hotrod scene and hangs out with people like Gale Banks, so my thinking is that he might have some valuable info on the subject? I though I ask here to see if anyone may know anything about cars going to the crusher driving with tempered smog equip.
About 5 years ago, I was coming the other way and saw one of those rolling smog check set up. They funnel all the cars, similar to soberly check points, pick only a certain ones to get check. I believe they sniff and put them on the roller. I hear they plug your OBD 2, if you fail that, then they sniff you. |

Someone driving an older 911 that smell of gas the minute you pull up and refuse the test? How's that going to sit with the CHP or Sheriff officers? Anyone ever refuse that test yet? I don't drive my car all that much, but like to avoid it like hell. The little they know, the better.

I've never heard of any of these people. You have still provided absolutely nothing to back up your alarmist claim of California crushing modified cars. This has all the trappings of another idiotic urban legend.

They have had the authority to impound modified cars on the street for a long time. I don't know what they do with impounded cars, but they can take it right now if they pull you over and it is modified in a non-approved way. Pull you over for tail light blinking too fast, look your car over and give it the hook if it has the wrong stuff under the hood.
I have declined to participate in the roadside sniffer. I asked the CHP officer if I was being detained. He said they were doing this roadside check. I asked again if I were being detained, because he did not answer one way or the other. He said no, I asked if I were free to go now, he waved me on. Thom, the STAR program is where they hit cars that tend to not pass smog with a little extra ding, make them go to a test only smog shop. They charge more for a few reasons, primarily because they can. For example, if you own pretty much any Honda Civic or Integra, you are going to the test only place, your M3 must be on the list. I like the place on FO Blvd, just S of North Ave next to the radiator place. They have a coupon in the Pennysaver generally. AB550 has you pay $200 every other year, instead of $50, and you have to show you spent $XXX on repairs. CARB is all about money, always.

The Pennysaver no longer exists, as of last week.

Nothing to back up here, Thom. I heard from my neighbor, and I know he involved with various auto or hotrod "people". I am simply asking here if anyone heard of such thing. Now I know.

I was recently told that California now requires a recent smog (90 days) before you're even allowed to register your car in another state. Unbelievable.
At least the testing isn't as stringent in Truckee as it was in Auburn. After 10 years of no problems, my old smog guy wouldn't even test me (a couple years back). He tried to force me to visit a BAR station for my smog, where BAR would have forced me to retrofit a stock SVX exhaust system on my SVX Syncro Vanagon. Apparently, BAR now presents further hurdles in order to retain your BAR sticker. |

That's how it is done in AZ unless you have a pre OBDII car, then you have to get on the rollers and sniffer.

Yeah, it's insane. Spreading nannyism & control to other states as best they can. I'm getting out ASAP, moving the snow condo further up North (within the next 90 days).

Not sure if we are spreading it or other states are simply following us. I have give credit where it is due. Remember those smog apart days whey you were a kid? Its so bad that when we went running outside that we just couldn't take a deep breath without coughing. Now that air has been clean for some times. A lot better if you ask me. Part of that is due to tighter reg. on cars and trucks. But the way we are going and all the none sense like classic cars are just BS. It is what it is, so I am here trying to soak it all in. The 30 year bill is start to make a little sense. Its a start, but who knows?

Sorry if I came off a little harsh, but I can't stand the propagation of unsubstantiated FUD. California has a bad enough reputation for this stuff as it is.

Mine took 2 days because I had a code (lean idle) and it took forever to clear codes and drive vehicle until it showed system ready.
