Fort Worth currently - have lived in Dallas, Denton and Rockwall (a little east of Dallas) since 1989. I know there are other areas in Texass that are even worse for heat and humidity, such as Houston (I don't know how anybody can choose to live there, but I say the same thing about here, and yet here I am
).

No doubt about 635. Really, all the highways here are a total shiit show - 7 days a week, bumper to bumper pickup trucks and land barge SUVs, with at least half the drivers with a phone or tablet in their faces. The only peaceful time on the road is between 3-6am.

Years ago, I had a manager that almost any time anyone asked him how he was, his answer would be "Fantastic," "Outstanding," etc..., and he sold it with a huge smile. After working with him for a while, it struck me, he changed the attitudes of everyone within ear shot whenever he did that. I liked it and the results and have tried to have the same attitude, and I think I've had a similar effect.

You’re exactly correct. After re-reading my words I’d like to apologize for appearing to single you out. I quoted your state stats to demonstrate how numbers can tell the same story in much different ways.
The rest was for everyone in general. I hope we’re good. You too, Glen. p.s. lived in Big Spring ‘95-‘99

Random (key element) positive impact on others around you is a terribly fun and great way to go through life. Keeps you young in your mind like when we were kids. I was having dinner with a friend who I haven't seen in person for years (moved away) and we were talking about life philosophies. She practices the same and we got to talking about the challenge of response or really lack thereof sometimes. The "return" is in the act itself, not the response and that's sometimes hard to internalize. Expectation is counter the philosophy, then it becomes about you and not about giving. This was all centered around a third friend and her experience with them but it really brought home that it's about the action for it's own sake and not their reaction.

I know what you are saying above but IMHO, the latter folks are just passive aggressive versions of the former. Who actually takes the time to write a post explicitly to tell the community that something isn't for them? What is that about? Passive aggressive buggery.

I had a professor in Arch school that was a pretty consistent burner. The dude was bananas (as all good architecture professors should be). A few of us made the trek in the mid 90's. At the time, the music component was in a separate district and it felt like a smallish festival. Loved the rave aspect and the architectural component. I went once more in the either 2002 or 03 and things (for me) definitely changed. A significant increase in people, and arseholes unfortunately.
As with anything that expands or becomes more "mainstream" (music festivals, film festivals, etc), the spirit of the original concept becomes a bit homogenized and less desirable- for me at least. I can't imagine what it must be like today, and have no desire to check it out any more. I have a couple close friends who are regulars and feel enriched when they return, so I'm happy for them. Its always fun to talk about when we reunite. As an X-er, I often relish the experiences of the generation before me and feel like I missed out on so much of the car, music, life scene of the late '60s/early to mid '70s. Boomers will (understandably) roll their eyes at me, but my BM experience is small chance for me to say "I was there". Quote:
The funny thing about passive aggression, is that the offender is usually blind to the offense. YMMV. |

Hey just because it is NOT on my list of things to try, I have no desire at all to prevent anyone else from attending. I hope they have fun and enjoy, really, it is just not for me.
I hate large crowds. That goes for places like the professional games or college levels of watching other people playing a game in a stadium. There are many many things in life I have never tried, and never will. Never tried homosexual sex, tattoos, body piercings, LSD, or any illegal drug. And I am not saying they are related, except as thing I will never try. I have never shaved my head, never tried to be a cowboy. Never been line dancing at a country bar. For the folks that enjoy any of that, great, and have fun. Just do not expect me to participate. And this is a thread about Burning Man on an open forum. I have every right to say it simply is not something I care to try. I did NOT say it was something that should be outlawed or prevented. So go have fun.

I don’t like C&W music. Just that simple.

^^^ Not even a few songs, just a little bit?
Maybe this from 1988? Just stumbled on it last night and your comment popped in my head. I think it's a good tune, and, coincidentally, one of the songs of choice for Line Dancing. Full disclosure, I've tried that, suck at it, I might try again if the right woman asks me. ![]()
