My father in law has a 2012 Quattroporte. It's pretty great to drive. He has had it for almost 2 years and it hasn't really cost him anything yet, but he doesn't put a ton of miles yet. I'm sure there will be some horror stories ahead.

In my last year of time attack, there was a new Masarati in the same run group as me. My 2500 lb 77 911 wide body with the 2.7 with carbs, cams, and 9.8:1 compression was faster around the track... It annoyed the owner to no end... He would always hit the paddock just before I would pass him... Laps times don't lie.

The engines are similar, but not quite the same. Maserati has a cross-plane crank. Ferrari uses a flat crank.

I thought too. Hence the Mazza's typical V8 sound.

Was thinking out loud as I start to rebuild my 928 engine. hoping to get the heads back by the end of this week. Might have the car on the road in the first week of April. Today I put an Eclipse head unit and JL amp in the E320, what a huge difference over the stock Becker, and the "active bass" in the doors really works now. And now I need speakers. Yes, I like projects.

The Cambiocorsas and Quattroportes from 10 years ago are terribly ugly cars. If the engines were made to higher quality standards than the cars, just thought it would be a fun and "cheap" and way to get good hp and amazing sound.

Shaun, as impressed as I am with your ability, I would be genuinely amazed if you succeeded at swapping in a modern Maserati engine into anything. They are so ECU dependent and networked with other car systems that it is a monumental undertaking.

I had a 2003 Coupe Cambiocorsa with the F1 gearbox and hated it. With a Tubi exhaust it sounded epic and the engine was fantastic, but the rest of the car was crap. Balky and jerky gearbox, numb steering, soft handling, fragile interior. It looked and sounded great but I typically chose to drive my RX8 instead. As for maintenance and parts prices, they are OMG expensive. Many parts come from Italy and much of the service requires the proprietary computer, such as changing F1 clutches every 25k.

They are cheap, I did a quick search for 2006 models, looks like you can buy them in the high teens all day. (Although even that seems too high to me).

But it looks like you can also get just the engine for around $5K, probably less if you really looked.

As Matt says, I think you would need an entire running car to pull the harness and DMEs with the engine. Even then it may not work but would certainly be an interesting exercise and probably worth the risk in time. Making an ITB or Weber set-up for one would solve most/all of the harness concerns. Maybe 5 years from now the serious enthusiast will be able to 3D print a metal intake.

Anyway, part of this came from knowing a friend is putting around $25K into a 928 engine to get a reliable and track-worthy 400 hp/450 lbft.

Just thinking for fun.

Where were you looking? I did a quick search as well when I opened this thread but I did not find them quite that cheap. More like mid/high-20s. These were attempted asking prices on eBay, though.

There you go^^^. But still, you'd need all of the electronics and ECUs, etc. Absolutely dumb as a post idea, I hate to say.

Depends on your skills. You could run that engine with an aftermarket system. Eventually.

I agree, there are so many solid, easy, powerful aftermarket V8's out there, I just don't see this as anything other than self induced torture.

If It was a high strung V12 id be more onboard wth the idea...

Better plan would be a wrecked D3 Audi S8 with the V10 FSI engine out of a Gallardo!

Can you imagine how much that would actually cost?

I've heard that Maserati is the only car brand that can and has gone below zero on the depreciation scale.

I see them the same way I see a 15 year old SL500. Cheap as hell but too expensive to keep on life-support.

I'd like to splurge one day and buy a really clean one, and then drive the snot out of it.
When it dies I'd pull the registration and plates and just walk away.

I figure that would be a really fun week or two, or maybe even a MONTH!

My local engine builder told me the cost just for the parts for the Ferrari engines he does the machine work on for the Dealerships. Even without labor, it was unbelievable.
I am sticking with Porsche.
