A 2008 997 Turbo or 2015 Z06?

It's more a convertible/coupe question for me. I'd take the coupe. If both were coupes, I'd take the 997 TT.

Thanks guys for bringing me out of the red mist. I'm thinking more analytically now.

I did drive the Z06 and it is WICKED SCARY fast. Just a soft press of the throttle will bring the rear end around into oversteer. It even has a built in track camera and data acquisition mod. ...But it is plastic'y, already has rattles and squeaks, and is depreciating fast. He paid $105K less than a year ago, yet the dealer only offer $72K on trade on Friday (Hence why he came to me with the $74K pay-off offer). My guess is it'll be worth $50K this time next year. The 997TT will likely never be less than $50K.

It's not over yet...I need to check the realistic value of my TT, but I'm leaning hard back toward keeping the P-Car. (aigel, send me your thoughts via PM)

Motion is right about the cabs. My POC friends gave me a ration of S#!T for buying a turbo cab, even putting a baby blue cashmere sweater and a pair of white loafers in the front seat when I wasn't looking...but my wife and I are having a blast driving over to the coast at night with the top down and the heater and music blasting.

Cab bashers, ask yourselves this...What is worth more, a 356 cab or a 356 coupe? Or, a 63 Ferrari Modena Spyder or a 63 Modena coupe? It's even the same with vets. A 67 roadster is worth almost double a 67 coupe.

I've owned numerous of these "plastic POS's" along side "reliable", "well built", German engineered cars.

German cars are junk, my air-cooled included, the German autos I've owned are by far the least reliable, most delicate and exorbitantly expensive to repair. The American car's I've had did nothing but took a killer whoopin' and kept coming back for more.

(Caught me in a moment: I'm currently re-organizing the Saucy stable with American cars in place of German. I will be taking it over the barrel to fix and maintain the 911 however)

I'm sorry I'm whining here, but if you guys can't tell from these posts, I am out of love with the high-tech nonsense and coming back around to simpler the better mentality. And NO, a flat air-cooled 6 is not a simple engine. A chevy 350 is a simple engine.

There is no reason an engine rebuild on a 911 should cost $20k, I just don't care why, and you're only making piddly hp. (For someone with no knowledge, drop car/keys and pick-up kinda scenario.)

Spend $20k on X v8 set-up. Actually spend $19, and leave a g-note for continual underwear replenishment fund.

I think my car's been off the road too long, dry spell without driving is making me rethink all the ludicrous spending I did on it to date...and after all that it's now in need of engine and tranny rebuild.

Maybe I just need to get into a cheaper hobby, like prototype spacecraft or gambling

I think you will miss the P car dearly if you sell it for a Z06. I know the P car has higher maintenance but there is no substitute.....

He found a dealer who gave him the pay-off value and put him in a fully loaded 2016 convertible for "close to a straight trade".

I certainly don't want one bad enough to give up the TT and go buy one retail, or from a stranger.

...but I had to laugh that he traded it a Corvette convertible.

Just had to say that the dealer offering him low-70s, (wholesale), for a $105k sticker used car is not "outrageous depreciation". It's probably an $80k retail car now and it's a lot of $$ for a dealer to have tied-up in one used car. The depreciation on any used 2015 911 would be similar, and of course you would.not have to pay sticker for it when it was new so do the math correctly.

The depreciation on any new $100k or more car is severe, some are a lot worse than this example. Check AMG Mercedes that were $160k sticker a couple years ago. It's a half-off sale.

The z06 doesn't have the LS9, but the LT4..... albeit both supercharged...
The lt4 would be the deal breaker for me... As you're only buying the power plant at that point...
LT4's "powdered metal" con rods, and cast pistons...

The ls9 is the cat's meow...

say what you want about pushrods, but dollar per dollar, or pound per pound, the LS series engines, and the new LT series engines are more powerful, and more economical, and more reliable, and smaller, than any Porsche engine.

Putting aside the performance we are comparing here, it's damn hard to beat the overall experience of driving a cab. On a nice day it is sheer joy.

The fit and finish on a Z06 won't come close to your 997. My 07 Z06 interior is all plastic except for the seats.
If you want a Z06 look at the C6's. I track mine a couple of times a year without issues. One thing to look out for. The engines in the Z06 (LS7) have problems with valve guides. The exhaust valves have a reputation of breaking off hitting the piston. It's similar to the IMS issue. Not all engine failures but everyone worried about it (myself included).

Well, valve in the chamber, that may be needing a few more bits than just heads ... stick a rod through the block and wreck the crank and you can build a new engine ...

You could not pay me enough to ride around Southern California in an open car. The sun here is brutal, (nothing like the Midwest), plus I like the privacy of a coupe with a little tint on the windows. On a nice day, I drive with the windows down but I like the shade over my head.

I'd actually consider a 991 cab because they are so beautiful with the top up but it would be tinted and the top would always be up during the day, maybe come down around sunset or at night once in a while.

I know some people love them but it's a really subjective thing. Also, the roof line and side windows are arguably the best looking part of a 911, coupes are lighter and stiffer, etc. It just starts to add up.

The fix is somewhere between $2-4000. It's cheaper than when I had to replace the valves and head studs on my old SC.
I'm probably going to have mine done in the next few weeks.
