I can relate... you don't want to stall but you also don't want to look like a wanker going voroom voroom on every shift.

That (for me) is the fun of driving a stick... getting the RPM's just right and slipping through the gears... sigh...

I swear... with God as my witness... I WILL own a stick shift again someday!

My Toyota Yaris has no tach, quiet motor and a heavy clutch- been driving stick for over thirty years and had the Yaris since new in 2008 and I still kill it every couple weeks- of course it is a Yaris, so embarrassed even before killing it.

I had a 9 passenger VW diesel Caravelle in Europe last week (6 speed). Its a diesel, so it can almost get away in 1st gear without any additional gas, but I still managed to kill it several times. A lotta torque, so when it stalls, it leaps forward quite a bit. Very embarrassing!

I drove one a few weeks ago, and it seemed like it was the slowest car I had ever driven. Are they all like that ? Stalled it 3 times in 5 Minutes as well.

I laughed at a guy in a Boxster tonight

I've stalled a Subaru Forester. I laugh at myself.

It's all good. I'm not perfect. And that clutch is vague.

Like many small cars, if you go briskly off the line to speed, everything is fine. Now if you need to go from 35 to 55- ouch, seems to take forever. Good DD, ergonomics suck, but 40mpg, hauls a lot of stuff and very reliable.

Sounds acceptable. I'm thinking there was something wrong with the one I drove.

The 2.5 Boxster is easy to stall out. the 2.7 much less so. I've had one of the former and 2 of the latter and I badly embarrassed an aggressively prepped 3.2 Carrera in my '06 2.7 on Angeles Crest. They are spectacularly good driving cars in the twisties. The best, IMO. Would still have one except for the depreciation factor. It may not be the car for you if you are insecure...

I think it is pretty poor to laugh at somebody in that situation. Having owned a Boxster it is fairly easy to stall.

The driver might have been having a bad day and could have come over and punched you. Your wife was right.

Ok, so it sounds like I may have been a tad douchie as we all have done it (stalled).

The part that made it comical in my mind was the overall "scene/image":
Buff, studly, muscle guy driving a "girly" car and can't drive it. Bwahahaha. (No flaming here, I'm not a boxster hater, but let's face it....it has that reputation.....I drive a girly cab and I love it).

What I didn't realize was it sounds like the Boxster has a tricky clutch. I assumed it had a modern day, almost impossible to stall clutch. I would think there is no comparison to a 915 that many here have experience with.
Thanks for pointing that out.

I have stalled our 2011 TDI more times than I care to admit. My wife gives me a lot of **** about it. I blame it on the hill control.

Yes, I would have grinned about it because I have done it and know the embarrassed feeling.

That's funny, I was just reading through the thread and about to post about my (new to me) Jetta TDI manual. The thing has one of the tallest first gears combined w no torque at idle that makes stalling it really easy if your mind is somewhere else when taking off. Conversely, I've dumped the clutch back in when I feel it stalling and then popped it with more throttle and completely lit up the front tire taking off, which is also the opposite of smooth.

I would more or less agree w this, you should use the minimum throttle necessary and handle it w modulation of the clutch engagement as the machine begins to move forward.

I should be severely blushing. I occasionally stall the SC even after 25 years of ownership. Maybe I should follow my own advice I give to others in regard to NOT stalling the 911. I say "Give it a few extra rev's then when you feel it start to move and just hold the clutch there. Don't let it all the way out yet. It's like an ordinary car trying to take off in 2nd gear."

My engine has a different cam or cam timing. It has very little torque down low but REALLY revs and has excellent power 5,000rpm plus.

I had that happen a lot when the clutch master cylinder was going out on my '88. I could never anticipate when the clutch would engage.
