When I was in university, one of my buddies found a trunk of his grandfather's old clothes in his grandparents' attic. There were 2 tuxedos inside there dating back to the 20's or 30's. One was burgundy, the other was green and they were velour. One had a frilly collar.
Mike would put one of these on when we would head out for coffee or whatever. Always got lots of attention. These fit him perfectly. At the time, Mike worked at the Crystal Pool in Victoria - it was the big public swimming pool. He was the guy that took your money when you showed up to go swimming. He started wearing these suits to work. After a few weeks, he was taken aside by his boss and in a very round about way, was quizzed about his job satisfaction, etc. Eventually, his boss told him he had to stop wearing the suits to work because she was worried one of the 'big wigs' from the city was going to make the staff start wearing uniforms if he kept it up... Oh and me, I stopped doing the business casual thing when they rolled our salaries back. If I am doing a presentation, more meeting with customers, I dress up but for routine office work, I wear jeans and a dress shirt.

Havent worn a suit (yippee)for work since starting my own business 37 years ago. For meeting at corporate buildings I will wear a nice shirt and trousers and shoes, and a jacket in the winter.

When I worked in sales at the newspaper, I wore a suit and tie every day. I had 5 suits one for each day. Every 2 years i would retire the oldest and buy a new one. I like Italian suits best. When they instituted "casual friday" they said we didn't have to wear a suit but had to wear a company golf shirt, dockers and loafers. Plus we had to buy the stupid shirt. Not being a fan of their fashion sense I remarked at the meeting that it wasn't "casual friday" but "uniform friday". I was told I didn't have to participate. So every friday from then on I dressed in a black dress shirt with a black tie and wore a black suit with RED Nacona cowboy boots. Upper mgmt never said a word. Staff and clients thought it was pretty cool. Always the rebel..

Even of you never wear a suit, you should still have a few sport jackets and dress slacks. I wear those to restaurants, parties, fundraisers, the opera or symphony, museum and gallery openings... the list of suitable occasions is long.
As for the 60's suits, if you buy a modern suit and intend to look like a 60's ad executive... whatever you do, don't let the tailor cut the suit so tight. Europeans have always worn tighter fits but the current trend is to fit it so tight it looks like the wrong size. Apart from being uncomfortable, you'll look like your tailor was a blind man. JR |

^ You're talking to the skinny jeans guy though. I'd look like I was attacked by a sausage casing machine if I went with skinny anything.

i bought a few modern suits.
it's crazy how it affects you mentally when you're all dressed up. you stand taller, you speak with more confidence..etc. i like it. i'm happy i dont wear a suit to work tho..however i should dress better, even for construction.

I've been wearing custom clothing for 35 years now and, like Vash says, you feel good when wearing it. It also had the side benefit of attracting beautiful women in droves, when I was younger. In those days, I didn't have to work at all for the next date. Tabs may feel like a billboard, I don't know. JR |
