Then there is alimony:
Payment for past services due, or,
Payment for future services(female) or subsidies(male) not rendered. Where did equal rights go?

Da gubmint is somehow a third party in this transaction between private individuals.
Ok I'll stop there.

Crack ho's gotta work too . A couple of years ago, a buddy and I stopped by a convenience store at 10 am on our way to the dock to go fishing in St Augustine. There was one trolling the front entrance when she spotted me coming out and started my way...I didn't know I could still move so fast...hopped in his already running truck....get the hell outta here !

That's actually the biggest sign that you're about to be either arrested or robbed in a whore situation. The price/hotness ratio doesn't compute. I have a buddy who was approached by two, (two!), hotties who asked if he wanted them both at the same time for $80 or something. That's about $2k worth of beaver in these parts.

He's normally a pretty smart guy, (ok, maybe not street smart), but all of the blood in his brain went straight to his joystick and he said, "yes!" It might have even been, "Hell yes!"

He followed them into a motel room where he was promptly tied-up and robbed by a couple gang members. He really thought he was going to die. Not a good afternoon.

When he told the story, I reminded him of the oldest advice on earth when it comes to scams: "If something seems too good to be true, it is."

Do people on freeways get entrapped too? Years ago I got propositioned a couple of times while driving through LA. I would be cruising along, when a lady would drive up in the next lane and match my speed. I'd eventually look over and see them looking at me with a big smile. After a mile or two I'd look over again, and they'd be holding up a spiral notebook with big letters saying, "Want a date?" One time after I shook my head to indicate no, she went over next to a black VW being driven by a Hispanic guy. Pulled the same thing, but that time they left the freeway on the same off ramp. Since then I've always been suspicious if some lady drives along side on the freeway and smiles.

Rescheduling the trial date four different times in order to wear him down and financially drain him.

My opinion of the prosecution was that they were more interested in maintaining a nice batting average of convictions versus actual justice.

I am satisfied with the outcome.

Good outcome for 'Carl'.

I can tell you from years of experience: there are two stories always. One that is real and that they know and the other that is told to the wife. I've watched dudes lie to their wives right in front of me, knowing full well that I knew the real story.

You can bet here that 'Carl' was on the hook but that he got a break on poor recording. That's also why the ADA went so hard to try to get him to plead out. They knew he did it, they knew he knew he did it, but w/o the corroboration from tape their case would ultimately fail. In other words, they had enough to charge and give it a go but not enough to convict.

This is his time to rethink his life. If he hasn't figured that out, you may want to tell him. Otherwise, this will happen again (or some other stupid crap)

BTW, you are a good friend for sticking with him. Seriously, most folks in that situation don't have that going for them.

The laws in this country mostly seem like an emotional response to some situation, or morality plays, on both the conservative and progressive sides.

Why should prostitution be illegal? Why should certain drugs be illegal?

Drinking and driving? That is a safety issue.

There was a report on the local news by a guy who started looking at internet porn at something like 10 or 11. Needless to say, he became addicted to porn...Now he helps other porn addicts and wants to get internet pornography banned.

You can't handle ______, so you want to make it illegal for everyone. That is the American way...

Not all DA's are that honest. Some will just charge people thinking they can bully into a plea and get another belt notch on their way to higher office. DA's are also notorious for overcharging just to "get a conviction". There's some psychology behind this that DA's frequently exploit.

We had a case around here a few years ago where three people were driving around getting high in the dead of winter. One guys starts freaking out, strips down, and tries to take control of the vehicle. The driver stops the car and he and the other passenger force him out of the car and drive off. The DA charged the other two with attempted murder on the premise that he was naked and it was below freezing, so they intended to kill him. Really, they just wanted the high guy out of the car. The jury convicted them on some drug charges, but not on the attempted murder.

Absolutely. You don't get re-elected by saying: "This is a sad situation but one where government involvement is not appropriate. Therefore I will grieve but not propose any new laws."--Even if such a reaction would be the correct reaction. Big swaths of voters expect knee-jerk reactions to every tragedy. What we end up with is a big regulatory state, over criminalization, a state that feels justified spying on my private life for my own safety, and high taxes to support the above.
