I was checking in to the doctor's office about a month ago. We've probably all had to fill out that form that asks you if you feel safe in your own home and all of that. We have two wonderful golden retrievers ( brother and sister) they love people and love to play. But I can notice their behavior change significantly even when doing some playful wrestling. I can imagine that any dog can easily be trained to fight even the more friendly breeds.

Dogs may be half domesticated but that doesn’t mean they don’t retain most of how they were programmed long before humans turned them into pets. Some of them may be slightly closer to their wild ancestors than others and some of them are bigger and able to do more damage than others, but they all have the same instincts. That has not been bred out of them. They do well to adapt themselves to our environment, we do poorly to understand them. Not that they are smarter than we are, but they are certainly more observant. That’s why I say that most people are not 100% suited to dog ownership. And we all love them but not that many of us go the extra mile and try to interact with him in the way they need to be interacted with. 99 times out of 100, nothing bad happens, but that other time, it makes the newspaper headlines.

I’m not trying to preach here, I just don’t think as many people understand this as needs to be the case.

Just a little something I can't let slip past since there was some talk about statistics and how they can be misleading, etc...

A list of supposed bite strength based on the PSI of various breeds jaws is meaningless unless they all have the exact same sized jaws. A Yorkie w 500 PSI of bite strength doesn't mean schit...it doesn't have an inch of jaw area. A doberman does not bite harder than the dogs below it on that list, it just has a smaller jaw.

Obviously, a large dog w a high bite strength is the most dangerous. Think Grizzly Bear or crocodile. Pit bulls vary quite a bit in size, I've seen them under 50 lbs. and over 100 lbs. They have large jaws in relation to their overall size and very strong jaws.

Pit bulls are around 10th on the bite strength list and the dogs with more bite strength are all big dogs. Some breeds that fall into the pit bull family, like the American Staffordshire Terrier don't have particularly large jaws, compared to any dog of similar size.

Two people attacked this morning in FL by 2 "pet" pit bulls - a kid waiting for a school bus and then later they mauled an older gentleman. Note, the pit bulls were the "kids pets for the last 3 years" according to the low-life wanna-be-gangsta owner. The deputy put one of the dogs down posthaste when it tried to attack him. Three pits jumped the fence...

My daughters arm. Attacked by a pit bull mix. She was walking her white shepherd when the pit attacked both her and her dog. Young girl walking the pit had it on a leash but the dog was to strong for her to contro, broke free ! 28 stitches, she will be ok but she is now afraid to walk her dog. Not blaming the breed but way to much dog for the young girl to be walking!☹️

Pits and Rotties can be great dogs but their training must be absolute. They are both very powerful and have been bred over the years to retain their fierce determination. If something sets them off and they do not respond instantly to commands they will quickly escalate into uncontrolled rage. A raging, out of control Pit or Rottie is extremely dangerous as seen by these many vids.

We owned a Rottie mix and you could certainly see the fierce in her eyes. We trained her daily for 2 years and she was a great dog who never bit any humans. Gophers, squirrels, rabbits, and the occasional neighbor's cat who entered our yard were another story. She would often "stand in the gap" between us and anyone she did not know or like.

My current dogs are just not wired the same way. They don't have that fierceness in their DNA and while we still train them thoroughly, they lack that fierce determination found in the Rottie and are much more likely to de-escalate than rage. Dog breed and training both matter. If you own a Pit or Rottie and don't take training very seriously, you are putting your family at risk.

When I lived in California near the ocean, there was an 'enclave' of hard core surfer dudes.
Their Rottie would often sit out or wander on the sidewalk, unattended, off-leash by himself enjoying the sunshine and ignoring everything around.

They also had a beefy pit. Briefly. But I rarely saw that dog outside.


The most constant fear I've had from a dog was from a vicious 15lb Jack Russell who bit every one around, including the GF's own daughter and best friend.
It did not learn. Anything. Every way possible..

My neighbor had a friend visiting about a month ago. She had a year-old Pit with her.
She decided to unleash the dog because we live in a rural area.
The dog spotted me in the yard..about 75 yards away, and took off towards me barking.
I was wearing Bog Boots and no gloves. The dog latched onto my ankle..but couldn't pierce the layer of jeans and boot. If I would have had a pipe or wrench in my hands...it would have been a dead dog. The owner ran over and drug the dog off...all the while saying "Bad Dog"
I know sometime, that dog is going to hurt someone.
