He was also well known in the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu community. Although in this pic he's a Blue Belt, Im pretty sure he was up to Purple.

The only thing I knew about the guy was his name. I never saw one minute of him or read one word about him.

If somebody were to have said his name to me this morning I would have to ask, 'Who is he again?'

I gues I missed out on something.

I'm sure you'll be able to pick up tons of re-runs. He had many of his own shows. He also narrated some other shows. He was entertaining and refreshing for what I saw of him.

Me too...I just click onward when TV surfing if a cooking show comes up. It's one of those special interest celebrity things. Much the same if a pool champion dies...I'd probably be the only one here to recognize the name.

Are we sure the divorce was about his work?

Was he partially involve as a producer? Did he have some say on the traveling?

Wow. I'm the same age as you, but my problem is that I want to do too many additional things, and mourn that there's not enough lifetime left to do them all. I just sold a business and would like to buy another, but can't justify taking the risk at my age. Plus the decline in my physicality caused by years of pounding and abuse in a variety of violent endeavors rules out other things I'd like to do, like blade-smithing or endurance racing, as two examples.

If you're starting up or at a relatively early stage of a company at age 61, Paul, I salute you. That takes guts that I don't have.

AB was a wonderful, creative guy who happened to have depression. It's an insidious disease that robs one of one's own free will, and, it seems, is common in creative people. Like Speeder said, it's not that surprising.

The deaths of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain, and for that matter Chris Cornell, Chester Bennington, and Robin Williams, all hugely successful and wealthy, show just how small a role $$ and material success plays in happiness.

Same here....when I heard it on the news his morning, I had another chef's image....I reckon I don't know who that guy is either....

That said...RIP Anthony. I also feel bad for those he left to deal with this...

Yep...and once your basic needs are taken care of, I've reached the conclusion that it can be quite detrimental actually, for many.

NPR just reran a recent interview with him.

Was fantastic to listen to. He talked about despising brunch. Gotta love a guy that thinks that way!

Can't support an act that leaves a child without one of their parents though.

Money doesn't change things, it only amplifies the things that were already there.

I’ll go out on a limb. I thought he was great. Funny, he looks like my brother’s twin, actually add in Niel Gorsuch and they could be triplets. Anyway, AB was very active in the #metoo movement, very critical of all the abusers. However, rumors are surfacing that he may have some accusers.

Truth is, we will probably never know or understand what really drove him to this point.

Awhile back Princeton did a study that showed that once people reach incomes of $75K, making more money does not make them any happier. I think there is an exception for those of us who must have air-cooled Porsches in order to be truly happy.

I had a wealthy friend back in CA who would rent money.
His words, "There's nothing like hot and cold running maid service."
Another, "I've tried it with and without. I like it better with."

I've always enjoyed his travel shows and wished that I could travel like he did, with local 'fixers' that would take him to places that ordinary tourists might never discover on their own. And unlike so many other travel shows, his always dug beneath the surface to reveal sometimes little-known and interesting facts about the places he visited.

I once saw him while on a speaking tour to promote one of his books. After a few minutes talking about the book, he just started winging it, talking off the cuff and taking questions from the audience. Man, that guy had some stories...he probably could've gone on all night.

I thought that he wasn't looking all that well lately and hoped that he wasn't falling back into hard drugs. I was unaware of his emotional issues and was very sorry to hear of his passing...RIP Anthony Bourdain.

I'm a bit surprised to hear about this. Considering his lifestyle, I'd always thought that he'd soon be joining the ranks of those in the crosshairs.

I met Tony a couple of years ago after his No Reservations tour. He was as expected, down to earth ex-kitchen guy like myself. No Pomp or circumstance. We shared a beer, cigarette and some kitchen stories. GOD SPEED CHEF...Culinary Underbelly
