Hmmmm- Thinking of converting my 911ST racecar to a street rod.
Keep as 911ST or convert to street hot rod?????? After seeing what the Blue SC went for on BAT that was converted back to a street hotrod, I have been thinking of converting my ST racecar to a hot rod street car. Since I have another racecar (That is much cheaper to run), I just do not race it as often. The last race was 2 years ago at Coronado. I would never dream of selling it, even with crazy unsolicited offers I have received.
I figure I would get to enjoy it more often driving around, BUT I do have a matching number 72 T I could finish first. It has been stripped and is ready for paint- The motor is completely rebuilt with MFI pump and everything else. I think I just talked myself into waiting it out. Maybe I'll think about it more after I finish the 72T.... It sure would be fun to be able to drive it on the street whenever I wanted though. There have been countless times I just wanted to jump in and go for a spin! Converting would solve that. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I saw the BAT sale price. Incredible.
I plan to build something similar for the street, perhaps do a vintage race one day. I have just paid for my 15x8 and 15x10 minilites. I will use 11 inch rear flares (easier). It seems a shame to have your car sit for years at a time. |

I have seen your suspension set up in the Track section. Correct me if I am wrong, but that is not going to be that harsh on the street? Do you run 22/31? I say that and I am not sure how much your car weighs.
Give your exhaust a muffler and cat, remove the front section roll bar, pad the rear cage. Now it does not sit for years at a time. Perhaps cars and coffee. |

Would be a great shame to see a car like this retired from racing, but a greater shame to have it tucked away in a garage for months (years) on end. I say do it!

You only live once.
Convert it back to a street car and enjoy it while you can. -Steve

I have a picture of that car burned into my conscience and is the one that comes to mind first when I think "ST"... it's a beauty.
When I first started racing I was too poor, and too eager, to do it properly, so I drove my race car to the track. 8 hours each way. Always made it to work Monday morning! I wouldn't do it again. Point being, often race cars don't make great street cars, but at least with a 911 it would/should be pretty simple to soften things up a bit and maybe put some rubber back in the suspension. Whatever you decide, if you have the means and space to do so, keep it!

Much bigger market for a street hot rod than a race car. Go for it.

I remember this car well, and love seeing these older threads come back to life.

My 83 SC was a racecar, but I don't have the time to race and it gets more use on the street/getting groceries.
Jump in for some fun any time is the key.

There is definitely a chasm in value between actual track/race cars and hot rods on BaT. Obviously, do what makes you happy, not what makes you the most money, but as a streetable hot rod, it will be worth more.

Plavan, how much do you think is needed to be able to drive it on the street? Personally I’d do the bare minimum needed to get it on plates. This will initially likely result in shorter, but very intense / satisfying drives!
Then I’d go from there. Keep as is or soften further will become more evident once you’ve driven it some

Just as another point to consider: I converted my 914 racer back to a street car. CA made the process just a bit more complicated than it needed, IMO. VIN verification and "safety inspection" while the car was at the shop, combined with a DMV employee who didn't know the DMV regulations for cars older than 1975 just added to the "fun".
Now that it's back on the road, I do enjoy embarrassing younger BMW drivers on the freeway. The 2.0 liter badge on the rear was kept and there are indeed 2 liters in the 2.7 911 engine (built to RS specs). They're wicked fast and tremendous fun. You really should pull the trigger.
