Starting Problems
I just put my engine back in and now the car will not turn over. When I turn the key, all I get is a click noise? No turning over at all. Any suggestions on where to start. It's a 77 911 3.0
Thanks. |

The click is most likely from your starter selenoid.
1. Check your battery charge level. If your engines been out for a while, could be drained. 2. Did you hook up both heavy wires to your starter post? 3. How was the starter before? 4. Are you sure the engine mated properly with the trans? 5. Check your wiring. 6. Any anti-theft devices that you forgot?

As Chris pointed out, sounds like a low battery to me or a bad connection to the starter or ground.

Thanks for your replies. Unfortunately when I was recoonecting the starter to the tranny I broke the stud on the solenoid. I replace the solenoid but did not put in correctly. Instead of connecting properly, I just popped in to the slot and screwed in. After I did that, as soon as I connected the battery there was a whizzing noise like zzzzzz. I guess with the solenoid not properly installed, it actuated the switch. The key was in the off position. I took the solenoid off and fixed and correctly aligned. No there is no noise but just a click when I turn the key. I'll call the guy I got the solenoid off of and see if that could have caused any damage. I spoke to him the other day and he didn't sound to concerned. Sounded like a common problem for us first timers. Anyways, thanks again.

I'm not sre what happened there, could you elaborate a bit?
Did you get the selenoid "arm" attached properly to the lever that pull sthe starter gear forward? You have to hook the end of the selenoid (where the spring is) around that lever. Also, make sure you hooked up the two wires on the selenoid correctly. If you are getting a click, your selenoid is most likely actuating, but not pulling the starter forward into "Start" position.

What I did was put a new solenoid on the starter. When I put on, I did not attach the solenoid to the arm in the starter. So when i connected the battery, the solenoid/ Starter made a buzzing noise. I guess by not hooking up that arm, it was connecting the switch in the solenoid making that noise. That is why the key, though in the off position was still allowing power through.
Well, I disconnected the starter and took off. I pulled the solenoid and reconnected with the arm attached. I reinstalled and now I get a clicking noise when I turn the key. The buzzing noise above does not occur. The guy I bought the solenoid off of said it would most likely not hurt the solenoid, the starter maybe a possibility. He said to check the starter, run a lead from the large post to the slide on connection (after disconnecting the slide on connector) and use that to see if the starter then turns over. If it does, there is a problem somewhere other than the starter. I still may have a problem with the ground coming off the tranny, I have not been able to securely fasten it to the body yet. The old post I had to cut out. The bolt was rusted to it and when I turned, the whole bolt spun. Any suggestions, I would appreciate. Thanks. |

I forgot to mention that the arm inside the starter (that the solenoid connects to) did not move freely by pushing or pulling on it with my fingers. Should it?
Thanks again. |
