It looks like there are several varieties of Elring Dirko. Grey, Red, Black, etc.

JW - which is it that you recommend?

It really is sad to read about these stories. It makes you not trust any builder and rebuild an engine yourself, but I realize people don't have time or know how to do such things.

These cases seem to be popping up more regularly now.

I wouldn't hesitate one minute to bring it back and ask/plead/beg/demand they make it right. Split the case, redo the whole thing, whatever it takes. I'm sure we're talking a 5 figure rebuild.

"Rebuild was performed by a very reputable Porsche specialist (has appeared many times on this forum, generally very positive reviews, tons of experience) just under 3,000 miles and 1 year ago, came with a 1 year warranty, cost was top dollar. The rebuild was comprehensive: Top and bottom end, new Ps&Cs, CIS reseal and refurb, custom cams."

A lot of ill will could be generated by calling the shop out on Pelican. While I wouldn't necessarily threaten that type of action, and I strongly subscribe to the ability to give them the chance to make it right, I might threaten if I got hardcore pushback from the shop. But they'd have to push back pretty hard and not do the right thing.

Making it right isn't Mickey Mouse sealants, shoddy work and half measures. It's doing it right. Give them the chance. If they refuse or don't, it won't be good for either one of you.

Best of luck.

It takes some time to skin over so you don't have to rush and it seals well. Undoubtedly lots of other sealants that would work as well, but I like it. That is all.

Who did the build? There is a certain "well known Bay Area" engine guy who does house calls who I would not be surprised at all if he's the one who did the work. We had a problem with an engine that would not run properly even after many times taking it back to said builder for diagnosis. Turns out the cam timing was not set properly for the type of engine (1975 2.7) - had to take it somewhere else and pay much extra $ to get it fixed properly.

I had him set up my Weber carbs but they never really ran properly after he was in there. I finally bit the bullet and did a diagnosis myself, the float bowl levels were WAY off, looks like he never bothered to check them.

Good luck getting your problems addressed.

I'll withhold names for now in hopes the issue will be resolved reasonably (I heard back and they are willing to discuss). These things happen even with good intentions and expertise, so no reason to drag anyone through the mud if they are willing to be reasonable.

I'd communicate your concerns with a note detailing the issues you're experiencing. Give them a chance to reply and correct under their/or state warranty laws. If they don't, you may have remedies, either legal and/or via your state's consumer affairs dept.

If unsatisfied, let others know of the shop's poor response. Customer service surveys show satisfied customers tell only 2-3 friends/acquaintances; unsatisfied customers relay their dissatisfaction to 9 people. If a service provider values their reputation, they will/should make it right.

If all remedies fail, let the world know, then take your business elsewhere.

There are already enough hints and references to figure out who the other party is for those of us in this area.

I really wish that were the case but I say the opposite is true on forums such as this one. It takes a lot of time and energy for the latter group to speak up in contrary to the glowing reviews from the former.

It's inaccurate to describe the numbers who visit an internet forum and read a thread, much less quantify third party responses. That survey factoid I described merely relates to one-on-one exchanges, but I'd estimate the ratio of overall consumer responses remains about the same. People are more prone to share disappointing consumer experiences than good will that most people expect and receive.

Update: The shop was completely helpful when I called and said "bring it in and we'll fix it, it's under warranty obviously". Great to hear.

Man, I went through something very similar... My builder was horrified! He paid to ship the long block back and tore it down to the crank. All good now! The amount of money these things cost its the only acceptable outcome in a situation like that.

is this the stuff you use.
do you use it on the entire case or do you use 574 on the case webs.
what about bearing #8.
what do you use on the cam towers to heads.

Here is the thread on #8, which i followed (Henry Schmidt's threebond 1211 thin coat)

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-engine-rebuilding-forum/237341-case-sealant-8-main-bearing.html

And there is this

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-engine-rebuilding-forum/284737-complete-engine-sealant-thread.html

I think dirko can be substituted for 574 and threebond 1104. I got nervous on 1104 as it's set-up-time was an issue for me.

Pretty sure JW puts a bit of dirko on/near the #8 o-ring, I just can't find it .. well here ya go ...

#50 post

Leaving comment on the case webs for you to research, lots of differing opinions (like anti-seize on spark plugs ... , which I'm in the no anti-seize camp BTW).

And consensus on the FW seal is dry, dry, dry

on the all engines i ever did, i have never used anything on the 8th bearing or on the o ring, as well..never had any problems...but i did have a friend who was new at this used too much of the 574 and he had an oil leak right there ,he had to take the engine apart...
