123 ignition with MSD?

I ordered a Bluetooth version and then noticed some say not to use the MSD and use a different coil as well. Can anyone confirm if using the MSD is fine?

I’ve not heard that. I have an MSD and a 123ignition and the system works great.

Any idea on what coil you used? I have a new MSD coil already on the car.

The car is in Victoria so I can’t go look - I live in Kitimat. From this picture it looks like a Blaster but can’t say too much more.

I have it in my car; using the Blaster one- 8207.

123 and MSD work fine together you just have to wire properly. They do a poor job of spelling it out, so we all go through what you are going through to get answers.

I’m going off of my memory right now, so verify before you hook anything up, but if I recall you use the trigger wire straight from the MSD or other CDI ignition to the 123 NOT a wire from the coil like on conventional ignition.

Hi Ben,

Just looked at my setup and the black wire from the 123 goes to the white wire from the MSD.

Blue goes to ground, red goes to power and I opted not to use yellow, so it is taped up.

Have one also they work fine together and the blaster coil. Super cool setup and the control screen on the phone is nice as well as the disable feature.

Thanks - engine was built by 900 Werks in Kelowna BC so I can’t take credit and don’t really have many details to offer. I do know it is super fun to drive fast on twisty roads!

They said no to MSD+blaster (something with coil resistance values) but my turbo did not work well with 123/TUNE alone. With MSD+blaster its good.

This is pretty invaluable information.
Contemplating a 123Ignition mainly because by the time I muck around changing the springs in my coil and most likely a bunch of other stuff once I get in to it, it's still going to be a 50 year old core.

Realise that this thread is a few years old now, but I'm reading this as it's only the black that goes to the white of the MSD. The blue to a ground (where the coil is?) and the red replaces the slot in the fuse box where the red of my Petronix currently is

People in other threads appear to be happy with the base tune of the Bluetooth version of the Tune+ but in speaking with 123 today they said with the Bluetooth you'll definitely have to fiddle with the map and suggested getting the switch version for a quiet life. (Car is a 1973 911TE on which the vacuum has been plugged long before I had the car)
Has anyone found the base map on the Bluetooth to be good to go or did you lose years off your life fiddling with it?

If you’re looking to get everything you can out of your timing then yes get the Bluetooth. But if you just want something simple that you flip a switch to get stock or a few other basic curves then get the basic model.

The benefit of the Bluetooth is that you can tune while the motor is running. With a passenger adding or removing timing while driving is simple. Also if you hook up your vacuum then you can edit that map as well.

only the 3 pin cdi style can be used with the 123 if you want the MSD, if you purchase the 6 pin 123 dist the it must be used with the 6 pin cdi box only , and not the msd

What about the MSD into a 6 pin harness? I currently have a permatune hooked to a 6 pin. Before I added the 123 I put in an MSD briefly. Ian are you saying this won't work?

I guess I must have bought the 3 pin one though more luck than judgement.

Wiring wise red went to the bottom fuse in the engine bay where my Pertronix was. Blue to an earth. Black to the white of the MSD (also where the black of the Pertronix was).

The Bluetooth needed resetting bit after that it was all good.

Current the advance is set as (73 2.4T with MFI)
RPM Degrees
500 0
1000 1.5
2000 20.4
2500 22.7
3000 24
4000 27.4
5000 30.4
6000 32
6500 32

The MAP is zeroed out

Uhhhmm. Oh. I hope Ben chimes in here. I replaced the six pin CDI box with MSD using the magnetic trigger. But if I buy a 123 distributor I should attach it to the MSD as though it had points inside? I can do that. It just sounds funny. Would have spent a bunch of money on them had the answers been easier.
