missing wire?
I'm trying to wire up the relays for my H4's but it seems that either someone has messed with the wiring and changed the colors on me or that I'm missing a wire.
The wire in question is the yellow wire that plugs into "56" of the headlight switch. It is routed through a different 6 pin connector than all the rest of the headlight wires. Which relay is this? I do have one yellow wire that runs into a 6 pin conector but it is already hooked to another yellow wire. I'll try and post a pic of the wiring diagram to help out.

Why not just use the low beam wire to the fuse box as the trigger wire for the low beam relay and the high beam wire to the fuse box for the trigger wire for the high beam relay? That way, all the hard wiring work is practically done for you. The low beam and high beam wires will only pull a small amount of amperage thru the switch (which is what you are trying to accomplish) and you can pull the high load power leads directly off the + side of the battery! Plus, you can then run the "new" power wire back to the low or high beam fuse to get the power back to the headlights and still have the circuit protected.
Good Luck! Fred Cook '80 911SC coupe |

yep yep that's the ulitmate plan but the headlights don't work currently and I'm trying to figure out why.

Oohhh, I played with my light switch for AGES.
In the end, I manfully jumped 12v to every wire (that wasn't already 12v) which plugged into the light. I also went crosseyed looking at the wiring diagrams. I think I even wrote it down, but its at home. Ummm, what did I find. From memory: - one wire would make the lights go on - one made the dash lights go on - one (or possibly two) made the parks go on - this is because the position of the indicator when the car is off will cause the parks on one side to go one (actually, on diagonal corners, but my wiring has been messed with) It helped that my high/low beams worked too, and I knew it. My switch was dodgy. I seem to remember (but maybe don't trust my memory?) that the yellow was the one which made the lights go on... http://www.pelicanparts.com/911/911_Parts/Electrical/911_electrical_1973_CIS_Part1.jpg

yep that yellow wire seems to be missing on my car. Which 6 pin connector is it supposed to run to?

Tim:
First, did your headlights work properly before you started? If so, do you have a schematic that labels the fuses and their function? Again, if so, just connect the relays through the fuses labeled "high" and "low" beam; you could ignore wire colors, they may be different on your car, but for reference on my '78 high beams use a white wire and low beams a yellow. If you don't know which fuse is which, you could run a test lead from the battery positive and touch it to the fuse connectors to determine which ones are for the high and low beams (they're fused separately) at the head lights (be a little careful if you do this not to touch the wrong thing!). Fred Cook's description of how to make the connections is good, you just have to determine which fuses to use. Good luck, Jerry M '78 SC |

Waiiiiiiiiiiiit!
This kept me thinking, so I went home and found the wiring stuff I wrote down (helpfully on the back of the diagram I printed from this site). On the back of my switch (a '69), bearing in mind my car is NOT pristine, and neither is the wiring.... Terminal 30 - thick red - power 58L - 2x grey/black - park lights 58R - 2x grey/red - park light 56 - yellow wire AND white/black wire - yellow = headlights (through high/low switch), white/black - I have nothing noted - it might have done nothing? K - grey - licence plate lights 58a - black/purple - instrument lights 57 - white/green - the high beam indicator in the speedo I had tested each of these by connecting the individual wires to the red from the 30 terminal. Yeeeeehawwww! Now, the bit I remember being confused on. There was ALSO a yellow connected to terminal 30 (its a double terminal). I followed that along under the dash to..... nothing. So for speed add lightness - I took it out of the car. Hope this helps
