3.2 Seats Install - Where do these go?
Dear Pelican Brain Trust,
I'm working on re-installing the original seats on my 89 3.2. I have a few questions: 1 - Where do the small "L" brackets go? I expect they are to limit the rearward travel. Which track do they go on? What orientation? These brackets can be seen in the picture below, lower left. 2 - What is the stack up of washers for the belt clip attachment to the seat? I have a Belview washer and what seems like a paper washer. Is there a recommended sequence? I'm guessing the Belview could go between flange and bolt head and a friction washer (paper or other?) would go between the flange and seat frame. What is recommended? 3 - How many different locations (front to back) are okay for installing the seat rails. I'm thinking I want the most leg room. Any hints on getting the rails lined up correctly are appreciated. E.g. set the rails on the bench to equal and slid to allow the rear bolts to be installed? Thanks very much, -Henry

The two "L" shaped items are on the front of the rails to stop forward movement. The other parts are for the seat belts i believe.

Okay - I'll check it out.
I'm looking in Bentley. There is no "L" bracket on the outside in the front. So I guess they go at the front of the inside track. Thanks.

It doesn't show up in Bentley very well. Shadowjack is correct about the forward placement.

okay, I'll see if there are witness marks to confirm.
You are correct re. Bentley - it almost looks like there is a "stop" bracket in the rear held by two bolts. See page of 720-1.

I looked in a PET file that I could find and see this.
Looks like the "L" stops go on the rear.

The "L" stops are on the front on both the 84 & 87. Same for driver and passenger sides.

Later I'll take a look and see if there are protection (stop) features built into the rail in one direction or the other. Remember I have an 89. I think in 88-89 there were all sorts of changes. Hard to say at this point. The important thing is to limit the travel if some sort of damage will occur.
I'm guessing that a typical person will and can certainly push back with more force and more often than pulling the seat forward.

While for some reason the PET shows them on the rear of the rail, if you look at the workshop manual you will see them on the front, outside rail. (sorry for the poor image)
Consistent with this, the cars I have owned all have had them in this position. ![]() Todd

Regarding the washer plan for the seat belt latch attach I got this picture in PET.
Looks like two "spring" washers and some other washer. Two #26s and a #25. I'm going to take the position that if the bolt correctly installed and the latch stays pretty well put, that should be good enough. I don't want a safety issue.

Thanks for many chipping in on the "stop" question.
I had good progress today - got the driver seat front motor switch installed and finally working in the right direction. Putting the switch in is pretty easy after you figure out the 4 pin connector can be taken apart. The seat is in. While I had the seat upside down and on the bench I took a look at what was happening with the slides while they are approaching max. travel in either direction. When the slide is back (seat forward) the balls come very close to escaping except for a small bump in the slide sheet metal. As we know - losing balls is not good. I figure the stop is there to stop the seat a bit early while traveling forward to reduce the risk of losing balls. So I think, as a couple have said here and diagrams support, the stop goes in the front. On the issue of seat belt anchor I found the other spring washer so I installed two spring washers and the thin fiber washer (per PET diagram) and the friction/etc. seems to be fine. Now I'm futsing with getting the rails installed in the correct holes. All in all, making good progress and didn't break anything that I know of.
