What do you want your 911 to be....
My dad, an engineer, bought his second 911 in 74. He rode around the autoX track with me in my 66 911 and my 54 hot rod speedster with a 65 SC engine and a lot of speed stuff.
Now, my dad's 74 is my project car, im 72 and ive been working on the car for 10 years, as time permits. So, I kind of stepped back, the other day and asked myself, what do you want the car to be? Previously, i'd been sliding down the slope, buying "better" parts, while doing work and studying the physics, mechanics, material improvements posted on our threads. I am aiming for a quick, sharp handling fun car, something i can take to the track a few times a year for dE events, canyon carving and take out to the market on occasion. This is a fun, semi retirement journey. It is fun to see others actualizations of their vision - and how they make it happen. chris stock 74 internals,MS EFI, PMO ITB, crank fire EDIS, RSR flywheel, 6 lb KEP all aluminum clutch, ER sport rubber bushings, Bilstein HDs, New PMB brakes, discs, mc, Quaife quick rack, new SSi, Scart muffler Dunlop Direzzionales 205x15and champaign, sport seats, rebuilt 915 with GT lsd, Rensport shifter, stomsky, carrera bars and 21/27 t bars. Still need to work out the corner weighting and aignment. May go with Group 4 7x15 torque thrusts. If i had any more coin, i would up the CR, cams and twin plug. ce la vie Last edited by chrismorse; 05-09-2021 at 05:20 PM.. Reason: splling |

G'day Chris,
Seems like you've made great progress so far. Well done. My project is a much long drawn out tail of wow but I'm sure there's a silver lining, and it's very close. I'm in Australia. First problem is accessing quality parts without excessive postage costs. My wife bought me a 76 911 S in 1993 as a gift. It was imported from the US and not 100% complete. Down here at the time, a left hand drive vehicle could not be registered for the road so I had no option but to convert it. I also really love the 964 look so that's the way that I went. I know a lot of purists frown upon updating older cars, but that's the look I like and there's no way I could afford a real 964 down here in OZ. Seems it's OK to Back date a look but not update ![]() Life has taken many different turns for me and as such the car is still not on the road ![]() But now it's very close. Someone said that I have champagne taste on a beer budget. Hope to have it on the road this year. So, US delivered 911S, Midnight Blue Metallic, 964 narrow body kit, all genuine parts including engine cover with retractable spoiler, Elephant Racing poly bronze bushes all round, ER quick change spring plates, 22/29 Torsion bars, Cup 1 copies 7.5" and 9", wevo shifter with home made 917 style timber gear knob, SSIs, MSD ignition, carbon fibre hot air backdate, lowered to Euro height, some of these parts are not installed but I have them. Also have a sunroof delete panel from the UK yet to be installed but my priority now is to get it on the road. A sad story but true. Regards, Frank

I have a simple vision. Drive a period correct car that looks nice, has some modern amenities but looks original. Something fun to drive but can still daily.
I’m getting there slowly from a good base. Engine mods are a long way offf, I’m starting with the comforts first, and reliability. |

Chris, that's a great question and should produce some interesting discussion. The 911 can be made into different machines for differing tastes. I remember some great advice I received 30 or so years ago when I was in my early twenties and already a few years into my long love affair with Alfa Romeo's; a true "mechanic" (remember that word? pre-"technician") told me how many cool cars turned into much less enjoyable assets by going too far installing race-type parts ... springs, shocks, massive sway bars, etc. Sure, the cars looked cool, but they became absolute pigs on the road.
I've kept this is mind with my 82 SC, which I've had for five years now. I've done a few 500-600+ mile days in it and felt great afterwards; this would not have been possible if I'd had made ultra-track-oriented. I also won't be stripping out the soundproofing, for the same reasons. I like it to be sharp and responsive but also still a car with the utility and civility to be a capable mile-muncher. Mine: 82 SC Coupe; I rebuilt the engine with DC15 cams and SSI's; Auto Associates fixed 1st and 2nd gears; Bilsteins and Rebel Racing bushings F&R; Griffiths/Kuehl A/C system (one of the car's best features); Conti Extreme Contact tires, stock sizes. Kind regards, John

If you want something that really handles buy a 5.0 Mustang mine runs circles around my 86 and 82 Porsche. Cant compare. But the Porsche's are a lot of fun.

Great topic.
My '85 Carrera was my dad's. when he passed away early, I bought the car from my mother for what he paid. signed up for a DE, then more, then some more, then became an instructor, peaked in the early 2000's at 40 track days a year. then decided to gut it and converted to full race. ran with NASA for a bunch of years, mid-pack at best, but wow-what fun. Just finished having the 3.2 rebuilt at 69k miles- 40k+ were track miles, so pretty good, I think. Now at a crossroads. Love the car. know every bolt and it is a comfort-mentally at least. Gave up my competition license, instructing is still fun, but sure miss a street legal sports car. it makes no financial sense to convert to a road going outlaw style ride, but deep down that is what I want. Like John, a piece of wisdom bestowed on me, of great value, was "keep the parts you take off to go racing" Unlike John, I did not heed it. I could sell for Carrera race car prices or sink another $20k and put some street comfort back into her or keep on tracking...befuddled.

Back in the 70's my friends and I would rent a 24 foot truck in Latham NY and take 15 friends and 5 kegs of beer and two sets of scaffold and camp at the end of the strait at Watkins Glen we also had a generator and a 2000 watt stereo on the scaffold. Good times. Last edited by gomezoneill; 05-10-2021 at 12:42 PM.. |

So if the wheels are available w/ a tad more inset say ET25 instead of ET23.3 you get that extra little bit of breathing room

Always been a Porsche guy but my Mustang would kick ass. No contest.
I have a 1982 SC and a 1986 Carrera and a 1982 928. Mustang kicks all their asses. Last edited by gomezoneill; 05-11-2021 at 03:24 AM.. |

Tough question....
maybe cut out the cage and put in a lightweight interior and some other changes to make it more "streetable"... (it is smog exempt and has a license plate) maybe for sale... maybe an even more potent track and race car through some simple changes... Hope to figure it out...

I want my car to evolve as I age. I'm in my early 40s, and all I want is to rip around in a lightweight hotrod. So that's what I have.
I reckon in another 20 years, I may be more inclined to have a little more comfort. If/When I get there, I'll add back the sound deadening (with the latest tech available), install a stereo, redo the interior with leather, and add a bit more weight which ought to make the suspension a bit more compliant...and maybe go up a size in tire sidewall. For now, I'm very happy with a whole lot of hotrod that's just civilized enough to take the Mrs to dinner or the store.

Mine varies on the day, one side wants a very strong N/A build 275-300HP in a nice light car, (current SC is 2450lbs)
The other side wants a fire breathing turbo wide body beast 400-450hp in a sub 2400lbs car. My pockets say "you picked the wrong brand." |

Recently picked up a ‘83 from another pelican. It’s a former track car that’s been converted to a thinly veiled hotrod. My goal at 36 with back and neck issues that keep me from tracking it and a career that affords me next to no free time is to build my idea of a gentleman’s hotrod. The suspension is sorted, the paint is really rough. Adding back a nicer interior with sound deadening and the motor is currently having tons of leaks and other issues addressed. Ideally it will be something I can enjoy as is for a few years, then ultimately paint it, and refresh the motor

Targas ain't race cars, so I aimed for SoCal beach town hotrod. Plenty of period correct bits that you can see and modern reliability you can't. I wanted a car you could jump in and drive across the country without a 2nd thought. It's pretty dialed; I haven't touched my daily driver in six weeks and put 3k miles on the SC.
