1980 911SC, stock 3.0L, unknown mileage.
Started getting a weird, high pitched squeal, intermittently while driving. The noise started becoming more and more constant, and I could hear it easily at a stop light echoing off of other cars. Just had a full service done by Porsche shop, including a new belt. Porsche shop stuck their head under quickly, said possibly alternator bearings, but cant get me in for a month. Did some research here, sounds like my issue. Took the fan apart, alternator out. Alternator is going to a rebuild shop today, however, after more research, I've seen that these fans and housings are very susceptible to cracking, and my housing does have a few cracks. Fan has a chipped blade as well. It does not look as bad as most of the threads I've gone through on here, but I thought I'd get your opinions before I put this all back together. I really don't want to spend $1000 on a new fan housing, so if this is passable, I'm going to run it. If not, I'm open to recommendations on suitable replacements. Let me know what you think -

looks like mine did. I had it welded by my local machine shop about 5 years ago. Has worked fine since but these things are always on borrowed time I feel like. Eventually I'll have to replace it with an aluminum housing and I imagine you will too. I'd suggest you get it welded and you might need to provide more clearance by taking a belt sander to the fan blade ends. You'll want to make sure it doesn't touch anywhere once its all bolted back onto the engine. Remove material until you have no interference. Continue to use the fan and housing until it starts to touch again. might be years from now...

Ben McFarland could possibly fix the housing. His forum username is mb911. Pretty sure he can salvage the fan but if it were me I'd go ahead and get a new housing. You can get an aluminum one from EPS or the mag repro from Carpoint/DC Automotive like I did. It's a little less expensive ($640 shipped) and seems good quality.

Thanks guys. Did I read somewhere that the EPS aluminum fans needed to be coated so they don't corrode? I was also looking at the Rennline billet housing, if I need to spend the money I may as well get something good.

Shoot that one is sold out. Anyone have experience with the Rennline billet aluminum version?

I fixed my fan shroud. though it was way less bad than yours.
Yours looks like it has ended its life. just immagine the hours of withstanding heat, weather and vibrations. its not just sealing/welding the cracs, it has to be straightened as well. speak to a pro with knowledge on refurbishing theses. but I think this one is done. the SC has the small-diameter fan, partnumber 9301061010R CARPOINT has them: https://www.carpoint.de/geblasegehause-lichtmaschinenhalter-porsche-911-carrera-3-2-turbo-3-3-fur-90-a-lima_862_1793

I agree with Flojo-that's beyond worth repair.
