I did instal new rubberish bearing spring plates but was not happy with the movement of the spring plate arm despite installing additional spacers to avoid binding. So I reverted back the true and tried polibronze bearings from Elephant racing that I have had on the RST and previous Rvenge for probably about 18 years.

Today Alberto finally got its wheels on and landed on Terra Firma.

And, off to Bromley’s it goes for final prep and paint. It’s now been 14 months since the major body work and paint was done and I’m really happy to note that I have not had any flaws and shrinkage anywhere.

Stay tuned.
Cheers,
Johan

LEGOLAND, well, sort of.

Next on the agenda was to get the rebuilt 2.2 off the low dolly onto my new engine stand.

Not the most handsome Lego build but it worked.

I also have a 2.4S in the background which may be slated for extensive mods once I disassemble and asses. But first I want the 2.2 running and broken in.
More later.
Happy Holidays Everyone.

Happy New Year 2024-Final Paint

What a surprise! Got home from our holiday and found out that Bromley’s had completed the final prep and paint. Rob even personally delivered Alberto today. Paint is outstanding already but final cut and polish will have to wait until full assembly.

Happy New Year everyone!
Johan

I acquired these 930 calipers a few years back which I have now rebuilt and modified to hang on the “71 rear banana arms and front Koni struts together with 930 rotors. I know that this is far more braking muscle that this car will ever need but I could not resist installing them as they are, to me at least, so good looking particularly in Koni orange with the highlighted cooling fins and Porsche inscription.

Taking the day off tomorrow and hitting the slopes.
Cheers,
Johan

Glad you guys approve the Koni orange calipers…..my wife’s idea!

Pulled a rear turbo rim off the RST and test fitted it. Just needed an 8mm spacer to fill out the fender opening. It may need a few more mm once the car is aligned, but that will have to wait.

Spent an inordinate amount of time finishing off the tunnel innards..wished my hands were smaller. Happy with the fully restored pedals although I must admit that those Rennline covers for the brake and clutch are difficult to instal correctly as one drills directly into the metal pedal which already has ribbing embossed on its face so your drill has a habit of falling off the center of the hole thereby risking marring the soft aluminum pedal cover. My solution was to oversized the drilled holes so I could straighten the covers (brake is still off kilter..will have to fix). Also, the heads of the suppled screws are too large for the cover holes so I will have to source new ones…..quite disappointing!

More later.
Hopefully skiing tomorrow.
Cheers,
Johan

Life has been interesting of late. Fellow Pelican master craftsman Jonny042 (Project Heavy Metal and Heavy Metal! Part Deux - The Carbon Copy) surprised me a few weeks back with a new mini duck tail in CARBON FIBER for the Sweet Transplant. Gorgeous and so well fitting. Jonny said that it was ready for paint but I just love the look of the very smooth shiny CF surface. So naked in all its CF glory it will stay.

Jonny also manufactured a CF belly pan for the RST. It is so light and yet inbelievably strong.

As I said, it’s been eventful.
Cheers,
Johan

Johan and other fans of the bare carbon fiber look: The epoxy matrix that binds the CF is not very UV resistant. Therefore you must at least clear coat the CF parts with a UV-blocking clear coat. Otherwise, enjoy the look of your CF parts!

Jonny never ceases to amaze me. And having worked at a composites fabricator company years ago, Pete is correct.

Thanks, Shaun!

The parts are made from a very high quality resin with very good UV resistance. The manufacturer states it's perfectly fine for regular outdoor use.

That said, there are good reasons to clear coat (or better yet, paint!) a part like this, direct from the mold with no gelcoat... not matter how good the surface there will always be minute imperfections and slight weave texture from the cloth that can be filled/smoothed in the process, further improving the quality of the part.

I'm not planning to ever make parts intended for "bare carbon" finish but there is something mesmerizing about the weave of the cloth... I think on a classic 911 a good compromise will be to paint the exterior surfaces, but leave the inner fabric exposed. Often this will be a peel ply finish (seen through the cutouts in this sunroof panel) but also bare carbon that will be fine without any coating.

Good to hear, I should have known you'd have your bases covered and selected a proper prepreg. And incredible work, as usual!

Thanks, Shaun!

I think we are probably similar in that we both enjoy learning new things (and figuring out how to get the best results possible!). Possibly to our own detriment...

Just a quick note - I'm not using pre-preg as it has too many drawbacks for parts like these. I'm using resin infusion which may not have even existed when you last worked in composites! I remember being intrigued by carbon fiber many years ago but the purchase of an autoclave was a barrier to entry, as they say!

The processes have really improved, as have the materials, in the past few decades.
