'89 Speedster sunvisor replacement, tips or tricks?

I need to swap a set of sunvisors in an '89 Speedster. Unique to Speedsters, they bolt-in from the top of the windshield frame.

Any guidance on how to manipulate the rubber frame so as to "do no harm?" Will it need to be glued back in? If so, 3M Weatherstrip adhesive? Or, is it like the rocker rubber trim in that it merely sits in its channel?

The procedure requires that the rubber windshield surround (which also appears to function as the top seal weatherstripping) needs to be lifted to access the mounting screws.

If you have to glue it back on, I'd use urethane. That's generally what most sealing compounds designed for that sort of thing are. As far as removal goes I guess that might take some care and patience! Does the roof seal seem cracked or fatigued anywhere?

No, on the one hand, less than 5k miles on the car, on the other hand, rubber is thirty-five years old.

The more I study the picture in the manual, the more I'm inclined to believe that the rubber is press fit into the metal trim channel (like the rubber rocker molding, the rubber engine compartment seal and the decklid seal). At least, that's my hope. Have 303 Protectant to lube things up and nylon interior trim panel tools so as to "first, do no harm."

Well, as hoped for, the rubber windshield surround is, in fact, press fit into the windshield surround trim channel.

However, the 964 part number (that PET shows for the '89 Speedster, which I assume is a supersession), has a second mounting point, that the windshield frame does not have a provision for. I can only assume that Porsche expects you to carefully "remove" the, now superfluous for this application, outer mount.

Regardless, fun times this morning...

Thanks Bill, it is indeed stunning. Alas, it is not mine. A local acquaintance recently acquired it and I offered to help him with a few odds and ends. Being able to pour over a time capsule such as this is a true treat. One could get lost in the undercarriage alone for quite some time.

I dream of acquiring a "high" mileage, non-AC, Speedster and doing a handful of stealth / reversible OEM+ type of modifications and then reveling in the drive. Alas, even the 40k mile Speedsters are out of my price range, not to mention I'd be paranoid that some unobtanium, Speedster specific part (like the windshield), would require replacement.

I do find it humorous the number of Speedsters that came equipped with intensive windshield washer and headlight washers. Total anachronism. Dealers (a.k.a. "Stealers") must have loaded them up to juice their profit margins.

Thanks for posting this. Interesting that the original sun visor has no part # or factory markings on it.

I love those things. Umm, ten maybe twelve years ago I had the opportunity to buy a low millage, looked like new, one. I made an offer but not quite enough. Instead, me being Mr Sensible, I put the money into a property. I couldn't do both. But it's like lost loves. I often think of what could have been LOL

Indeed! One of my favorite sentiments about these 911s is that... "Records from the era are sparse, at best." Parts without parts numbers are emblematic of this dynamic.

Yes. This past weekend was the "eye of the storms" between two atmospheric rivers in SoCal. A number of us took our Porsches for a spin just because we could.
