Removing Steering Wheel Shroud '84
I'm getting tired of my intermittent tach on my '84 Targa and time to pull it out and get it fixed. I can slip it out of the dash fairly easily, but I can't get it around the upper steering wheel shroud without risking damage. I've haven't removed the shroud before and just wanted to check the process. It seems that it is different depending on model year; some have screws on the bottom, some sides, etc. Here's a pic of mine, with a screw on each side between the halves. I've got a Momo wheel/hub, and based on what I'm seeing it doesn't appear that will have to come off if I remove the shroud. Any guidance is appreciated!

You do have to remove the wheel - there are several small screws on the front, behind the steering wheel adapter.

Take the wheel and hub off as 1 piece - remove the nut holding the hub to the steering shaft.

and before you tug on the wheel to pull it off screw back on the nut with your fingers just enough to keep it on the shaft. that way when the steering wheel finally lets go it won't smash you in the teeth.

If you pull the rubber gasket off of the tach after it is partly removed, it may give you enough room to sneak the tach out without moving the shroud. It is tight but it fits (at least on my car).

That's a good tip, might try that first!

nope, have to remove the wheel, then clamshell to get the tach out. Be VERY careful when separating and reconnecting thr clamshell.. there are the little tabs that the side screws go into. those tabs WILL break!.. and then there will be nothing to screw into and the clamshell will not no longer be secured. done it many times.. inevitably the tabs get weak when trying to put the clamshell back on.

Great advice on this thread, Zuch nailed it - no need to disturb the clamshell to remove/replace the tach as it can be eased gently past it.
Instruments from John Bell (jbell959) fitted, quick test before putting the wheel back on. Bonus: shows the screws in the front of the clamshell - pretty obvious once you remove the wheel:
