What are you all using for speaker in-door rain cups/protectors with modern speakers?
Hey Gents-
I got a Blaupunkt SQR46 for Christmas and tried to wire it up. Turns out, the stock speakers in my car are long dead. So I went to the store seeking some 5.25s to throw in the front doors and came away with Hertz CX130s. It was only after I bought the speakers that I realized there was a speaker cup/rain guard in the door. It's farcically shallow, and so won't accept the modern speakers. I think I need about 2.25 inches to clear it. I thought about going without the rain guard, but that doesn't seem prudent and in any case, the speaker won't screw in properly without the guard itself. To the guys who have dealt with this in the past, how did you handle it? I see that there are some Porsche parts that sort of look like they'll work in one way, but don't seem to be the real solution for the issue. It doesn't look like it would mount properly to the door. Part number 911-555-217-00-OEM I found others out there that look like they can be 3d printed, but those don't look like they'll really work either. ![]() ![]() How should I handle this? |

I used a pair of rain guards that are a semi rigid closed cell foam, instead of hard plastic. They fit since they can be deformed to get in there and not be too deep. I think I got mine at Crutchfield, but local stores may sell them.

Agree with the foam! I got these from Amazon when I did the door cards^ and new 6” speakers up front in the SC: https://a.co/d/eFUWzy2 - I cut a little slit on the back to feed the wire through (and allow for any drainage).
The pro is that if you ditch the plastic OEM-style covers you can go much bigger on the speakers. Stuck a Hushmat (https://www.crutchfield.com/S-0Tv8p0Bxonk/p_658WAVEBRK/Hushmat-Wave-Breaker-Kit.html) behind each one too. > 25k miles, a bunch of rain and still running strong! ^ http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/1159035-installing-carbone-rs-door-cards.html

Agree with the semi rigid. I had to do some cutting of the foam so I think I ordered 2 sets and returned the unused set after I figured everything out. I also did new holes for the new speaker and foam. Went 12-3-6-9 o clock and used some good screws with good threads and have had the speakers out numerous times. Keep us posted! Erik

Common issue. The usual fix is to space the speaker outward with an MDF or plastic adapter ring (¼–½”) and keep the factory rain cup.

I thought about that, but I'm worried about clearance with the door card. If I wasn't trying to keep the original speaker grill, it probably wouldn't be an issue.

I just ordered some of these. Should be an easy winter project. The original plastic ones were long gone when I upgraded my head unit and door speakers last summer.

I'm working on my own setup in my '77 911S. Do you mount the speaker directly to the door or the door card? I ask because the PO mounted them on the door card because the 5 1/4" speaker is slightly too small for the hole in the door - I would likely need some sort of adaptor to mount them to the door itself. Maybe I should look for a 6" speaker.
Thanks. Dave |

Take a look at this thread:
https://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/778272-door-speaker-spacers-8.html My setup: I have the spacer plate mounted to the door. The door card goes over that plate. I used a foam insert similar to above sandwiched between the speaker and the door card. The screws holding the speaker in place drive in to the spacer plate. |
