Yes, if you buy it in CA, that's the case. You can transfer ownership and even start driving it, but you'll have to get smog done within 30 days. I did this on the SC.

I agree with the other. The 3.2 engine runs extremely clean. Have you removed the cat? If not then probably a bad 02 sensor, or a bad wife.

I passed smog about a month ago with a Steve Wong chip. The readings were VERY clean. I swapped out my Fabspeed cat bypass, slapped the cat back on, ran it for about 30 minutes. Then swapped the bypass back.

As a matter of fact, I just let a fellow Pelican borrow my cat for the exact same process on his car. Also passed.

I agree with the others, cat or O2 sensor for starters. Especially if it runs well, which it sounds like it does....

Good luck!

Here are the numbers...

HC at Idle (851) is 205 CO is 0.48 Fail
HC at 2500RPM (2474) is 102 CO is at 0.53 Pass

I'm pretty sure the Cat is the contributing factor. It has a slight burp or lope at idle but she runs strong. I used to drove it in 110 degree weather in Dallas without ever worrying about overheating... Unless I was caught in rush hour.

I'm going to put the chip back in (vertex). The low end tourque is non-existant without it. Guy's in SLO should get it fixed pretty quickly. I'm just not looking forward to paying for a new CAT. Isn't that around $400?

One final thought... I was told my carrera was a Gray market model. It has all the smog equipment but if it is really a gray market porsche would this explain why it so hard to smog?

And yes I am aware that I need it smogged in order to sell it.

grey market would not have a cat - this would have been added on at some point

it is easy to tell if a cat is gone or not, pull it off and look inside, if it is full of a meshy like substance it is good, of it is only half full, not so good, if empty it is gone.

I had to replace mine, with a good one. I don't suggest it (disclaimer), but maybe you can borrow one for the test only. Or if you buy one replace it wiht the old one after so you have a new one for two years from now.

Jim, that's not necessarily true. Mine looked good, B&B thought it looked good too. But mine had been running rich for a while, which fouled the 6year old cat. You can't tell just by looking at it.

If it's just the cat, the NOX numbers will be through the roof.

Cheers,
jc

That car should pas easy. I agree with most of these posts, check the 02, Cat and make sure the mixture is within range. My 3.6 passes with ease, but I have a friend who had a bad 02 and it just would not pass. I would never purchse a vehicle in CA without having it smogged first. I think it is up to the seller to provide proof that it will pass. I just purchased a BMW wagon and I made the guy take it in to have it tested on his dime.
