new chip

just put a new chip in my motronic system for my 3.2 carrera.
the motor is transformed. it is still bone stock with cat and standard heat exchangers and muffler.
got the chip on ebay from a seller going by "turborob" it cost an eighth as much as a steve wong chip. is the difference that much in performance?

Wonder if they copied Steve's chip.

Paul, are you running 93 octane? Any pinging under load?

Hope it works well for you. I bought a Steve Wong after years of trouble with other chips. The thing is that Steve customizes the chip for your car, fuel etc..

Now I'm sure Loren will be along here sometime.
regards,
Steve

running mobil 93 octane, drove the car over my favorite loop before i put in the new chip. put in the chip and did the same loop. ran the motor from idle to redline, lugged it down to crawling speeds in 3rd uphill and it just smoothly goes. no pinging at all.

you have a b&b dual exhaust? are you running the headers as well? do they work for you? I have read some real horror stories here and heard from a shop that sells them along side dansk and bursch that i should steer clear.

I have had the headers and dual outlet B&B for about 7-8 years. The muffler clamps broke early on and they FED-Exed a new set that have been fine since. The guy that installed said he would never do another. He com[plained about the fit, but I wasn't there and I don't use him as amechanic anymore for other reasons. The muffler does resonate in a drone at 2600 RPM or so. B&B is not the only one to resonate though. At some point I wouuld like to put a sporier exhaust on the turbo, but I will not install anythng that I haven't heard, outside of and riding in the car. That would be my suggestion to you.
regards,
Steve

how about heat? is it true that the headers aren't set up with a heat exchanger?

Sounds like a great deal for $40. Sure beats paying over $250 for a performance chip.

Wait, wait ...let me get this straight, it's "great deal" and OK for him to install this chip because he only paid $40 for it. What ever happened to you poke your eye out, blow up your motor and all the other stuff. Might not a $40 chip do it better and faster. LOL
regards,
Steve

If you can't resist spending your money on ????, what's better; $40 out of your pocket or over $250?
My sympathy to those who did the latter!

paulgrt,
keep me updated on this chip, I have a stock 87, it has the #10 jumper conected on the dme (calf. car) I haven't disconected yet it seems that the thing to do is disconect for a 8hp increase? any change in idle when replacing chip? What info did you get for install mybe you could post.
Thanks

don't know anything about cables and horsepower gains, that seems like a question for one of the tech gurus.

no change in idle with the new chip, the directions were simple and brief and so was the chip swap.
all you have to do is remove the computer from under the seat, carefully pry off the metal cover and open up the mother board. if you have an early 87 than you might have a 24 pin chip, seems porsche went to a new mother board during 87. my motor came from a later 87 model because it has the 28 pin chip.
I have not had the car dynoed so i don't have a clue about horsepower differences with this chip over the stock one, but it really does run much better than before and is loads more lively. nearly spun the car last night shifting from first to second up hill in a spot that I have driven many times, so the power is much more available right now with this chip.
it is 33 degrees F today and the car starts just fine and has no issues yet.
it will be in the fifties during the week so I will get a chance to see how it performs in a little bit warmer weather.
still no sign of knocking or pinging.

Installing an unknown chip is analogous to using an unknown operating system for your PC. (No Microsoft cracks needed here......;-)

yeah, I know what you mean. I still have the stock chip and keep it in the car just in case this one starts to go hay wire.
Should I get a diagnostic check done on the motor to see what it is that the chip is doing? There is a really good porsche specialist shop that I go to for alignment work. They do all kinds of work from restoration to preparing carrera cup cars. right now they are preparing race cars for daytona and sebring, so I imagine they have an idea about good and bad modifications.

You can get a dual chip custom burned that allows you to flip between stock and performance chip.....the part is like 25 bucks....
