With all due respect to those that like the 996 and newer cars, that is the first Porsche water pumper I'd consider. Beautiful.

To return to the original question:
I think we need to have the Boxter/Cayman 986 Technical Forum be its own entity, mostly because of the common technical issues. Do I have room in my garage? – you bet! I think the Caymen/Boxter is back to Porsche roots. Fast, mid-engine sport Spyders & coupes. I would hope to see the Supercup with nothing but Cayman RSR. We get to drive the street version. Look at the progression of 550, RS60, 904, 914-6 and Boxter. That linage is the best of Porsche. At some point our beloved 911 (rear engine) will have to follow the 356C. I think a Boxter-Spyder and a Cayman-GT Coupe are worthy successors. So, let’s have trucks and 4-doors. How do you want to see Porsche progress? I’ll take a Cayman RS lightweight in a flash. Best, Grady |

I agree. I'm very seriously considering buying one next year. Good looking. Fast. Super nimble.

Otherwise they're pretty similar, below the beltline of course. Fabulous cars, those mid-engined Porsches. Fabulous cars... Just about every new magazine coming out will have one in it. They're full of technical mojo...worth checking out!

This could be the car that finally replaces the 911.

The latest Motor Trend brought an interesting comparison between the Cayman and a 95 to 98 993.
"The Cayman S is 3.3 inches longer, 2.5 inches wider, and stands about the same height. The 993's 3.6 puts out five more horsepower." Makes a used 993 (C2S!) look like a great bargain. And about the price: "While there's no shortage of standard equipment given the Cayman S's sub-$60k base price (including standard leather upholstery and six airbags) alot of the most popular goodies-the ones that maximize its performance-are optional. Add the 19 inch rolling stock, bi-Xenon headlights, the Sports Chrono package, nav, and PCCB ceramic brake rotors, and the $70,000 marks will come and go in a hurry." I know these are not necessary but if your going to shell out this much money, you want to have the car you want. Porsche options are crazy priced! |

From the looks of it, the Cayman will just about out perform the 911. The 911 (997) has gotten big and heavy and as for me personally I don't have any real desire to own one. I don't mind Porsche having to go with the water cooled engine, that was inevitable. The 911 today is just a (very fast and capable) luxo GT. The 356 era bemoaned the loss of that car, eventually the time will come for the 911.

cayman... yes a fabulous car, there is one in my future.
I plan to wait for a lightly used one to take a bite out of the depreciation. Planning to use it as a year round daily driver (snow salt and all). No garage space so it will live outside. Does anyone have pics in black or charcoal ? I agree that it has the lines similar to an older 911 (this I believe to be a good thing. |

wonder how the act if stopping the '911 lineage' would affect used 911 prices? anyone have any thoughts on that?

I really wish Porsche would have stuck with the 9xx naming system instead of calling most of their cars something starting with Ca (Carrera, Cayenne, Cayman) a la Ford (Explorer, Expedition, Excursion, Escape). Sports cars should have numbers, not names. Oh, wait...Porsche isn't a sports car company anymore, I forgot.

It will be interesting to see what happens to 911 sales after the Cayman debuts. I wonder what Porsche expects them to do???

You cannot shoehorn 2 kids into the back of the Cayman - but you can in the 911. And the 996/997 have even more space back there than a 993 or earlier 911.
But I agree, the Cayman and 997 need to diverge somehow. ... and I expect they will

The best handling production Porsche ever (limited smaller runs don't count) according to Excellence, deserves a separate forum. I still don't understand the name, but it looks and behaves super.
