Has anyones ownership of an older Porsche pushed them to a newer model??

Probably off topic, but I am having a blast driving and working on my 82 911 sc, the few issues which I have been asking questions about are almost resolved.

I was wondering how many people started with an older car and decided they must have a newer model? or did it push you to even more of a vintage car..

I've got the newest model I can afford...'86 Carrera. I think there is some advantages besides the cost...lighter weight, less gizmos and classic styling.

I went newer, from a '70 to a '73.5.

I'm getting close to having my SC the way I want it. If I bought something newer, I'd have to start over!

I started with a '74 914 (still have it) and then next got my '81 911SC. The SC feels much more modern than the '74. It also feels a bit more reliable overall. Mostly that is because it's newer and only has 88K miles on it. The 914 is up to 160K and needs a few small things and a starter. And while the engine runs good, it could use a good freshening up.

If money was no object I wouldn't mind adding a Caymen S to the stable.

I got an 84 in 2000 because it was the newest and best I could afford. My wife's after me to get a more modern, comfortable car she can drive. I'm planning to get a 2002 or later 996 in the next year or two.

We recently entertained the notion of moving up to a 996....even saw a nice one at a dealer (a 2000 with 11,000 miles) and I knew the service history and previous owner. The sales manager was looking out the window at my car and told me that it wasn't his nature to "queer a deal," but he said that he'd never consider getting rid of a car like mine. I also considered the fact that the 996's aren't as user-friendly when it comes to projects, upgrades, or repairs. Decide to keep what I have.

When looking at which 911 to get, reading this forum pointed me at the "bullet-pruf" years of 78-83. I needed a daily driver.. and I got one very reliable one in a 1980SC Targa with 155k miles on it. I've done a whole bunch of minor mods, but nothing too complciated. I am interested in the Carreras for the motronic and G50 transmission, but not yet the lighter (but less-reliable so I've heard) 2.7s - some day. The 964s and 996s seem rather expensive, complicated and not nearly as reliable. Ok.. so they may be faster, but the *driving experience* of my SC is eminently satisfying.

I started out with a 69T(boy racer/rs wanna be) moved newer 73( with a 3.0L), then 79SC Then I stepped up with some $ and brought a 67S, The 67 is real pleasing and is a "keeper".
New is good for daily driver and old is good for raw fun IMO.

It's tough for me to drive my 84 cab from about November through April. When it gets real cold I wouldn't even like to start it for fear of blowing oil lines or something.

Hell yeah! Always to a newer model for me. First, a 1966 912. Then, a 1969 912. After that, a 1970 911T. After looking at the then new 1974 models, I started the hunt for my current car, a 1972 911S. I guess you could say I've been waiting for Porsche to come out with a better new model ever since.

It may depend on how much money you have. Porsches are expensive. Older ones in the 78-83 years are too but so uncomplicated, that it's no problem to do it yourself. If you don't work on your cars, and have bucks, get a newer car(993 max). 996 isn't a 911, but it is a porsche.
Newer cars these days are a buzkill. I have a bad attitude right now because of my allroad. Man, compared to the old school audi quattros, this is a piece of turd. Just too many subsystems. All new cars are this way if you ask me. Get a warranty. Nothing makes me more comfortable that the engine compartment of my 79'. No mysteries there.
