If I make a quick shift from first to second in my 87 Carrera w/a G50, and maybe don't leave the clutch fully in quite long enough, the shifter lever sort of "pops" out of first gear before I put it into second. This doesn't happen if I leave the clutch in for what seems like a little longer than I would in other manual cars I drive.
There is no crunching or grinding, just a violent disengagement. I have done this a few times but learned over the years to be careful. My transmission is currently out of the car and it had me thinking, is this normal? Do I just have to keep things nice and leisurely? -- Preston

It's a trait of the car. The clutch has different dynamics, meaning the rate of travel is not the same as the cable operated clutch. That may not make any sense, but if you push the clutch in a quarter of a second sooner and make sure you don't "short clutch," it won't happen. Another way to look at it is you are pulling the shift lever a quarter of a second too soon. It just doesn't work with the same timing as your 356, or any of the other cable clutches.
I would wager there is nothing wrong with your tranny. Conek, since his car is down, try this and come on back. |

sorry i think my problem might be alittle diffrent even though my shifter has had the same problem as Preston, mine also bounces out of second even when i'm not shifting which makes me think it might be a snyncho/mount problem

Milt,
Maybe you are right and this really happens when I haven't fully pressed the clutch in when I begin the first to second shift. Not sure, I have compensated for it without thinking about the exact dynamics of the issue. Let me emphasize that it really only happens when are going hard in first, running up near redline, and then try to quickly shift into second.

I agree with Milt, it's probably a timing issue. My 915 box does it too. I have a rule that I dont touch the gearstick until the clutch is in ( i.e. don't rest your hand on the lever). If I do this then I get a good -slower- change. I don't know if the G50 has the same set up as the 915 but in my box the cut of the teeth engagment dog/slider in 1st is squarish on one side and triangular on the other. All other dog/sliders are triangular both sides. I think this makers 1st hang on longer on disengagement.
Regards, Greg.

I agree with Milt as well. This happens to me when I get excited. Seems that if I move to fast, I have a tendency to start to shift gears before the clutch is all the way in. It is violent when the stick pops out. Nice wake up call.

Also tagging along as I've had that happen. My newly aquired '89 Carrera 3.2 has but 13,xxx miles and I thought something was wrong with the trans.
Only happens if I move shifter lever a bit to soon after pushing in the clutch. David

I've got the same problem, and my diagnosis is operator error, specifically a lazy/slow clutch foot.

Same here, sounds like a G50 trait.

Great, good to know this is a common occurrence, and we can relax about anything being wrong with our particular transmissions.

I too have experienced the same thing and always assumed my foot was slower than my hand.
