Pelican Community Charity Build
Greetings All,
Several weeks ago, I was struck by the possibilities this community represents. We are all a part of a large group consisting of people from every corner of the world with automotive experience ranging from novice mechanics to near "John Glover Level" bodymen. As a community, we hold the power to be a force for good in this world while we pursue our passions. I know there have been a few charity drives in the past, but the idea that really compelled me to move forward in this effort to gauge interest was the thought of a community build; this would mostly involve labor, not cash donations, and would directly link to our interest in the marquee. The idea is to restore a Porsche vehicle (preferably a 911) as a group, farming out individual pieces to members across the globe and, once the project is finished, auction the vehicle off for proceeds to benefit a charity of our host's choosing (to be named before we begin the project, for those of you who may disagree with the choice). As this would not be possible without member support, I'm taking this opportunity to gauge interest in the project before moving on to the next stage of planning. Anyone interested in a particular aspect of this project should simply make note of it in this thread. I thank you all for your attention to this matter and hope you'll find it a worthwhile pursuit.

Your post brings back one of "our" finer moments here on Pelican...lots of threads regarding the restoration of Barry Bennet's (RIP) car. Here's one link if you haven't seen it before. Bottom line, this community WILL respond if the cause is just...good luck!

I think its a terrific idea! Wayne should too - it is an awesome chance at some terrific PR. My parents will probably think it's a great idea as well - I've got all sorts of parts stored in their garage (MD) - for going on 20 years... 8-o

It's great that we're getting some positive responses here . . . I'm hoping the other hundred people are just waiting to see how this is all going to develop before they jump in, so we need to begin laying down some details. As it stands, we have no plan, no car, no space to work on it and no means of transporting it to whatever locale required for painting/auctioning. As bleak as this may sound, it also means that it's all open for input.
In my opinion, the best plan would be to build the car likely to fetch the highest return based on our possible starting choices (to state the obvious). So, in lieu of dreaming big, we should likely start looking to see what type of shells/cars are available to fit within the budget which . . . would be nonexistent at this time. Hmm. This could be a problem, but I'm pretty certain there are members out there willing to donate a shell or sell one really cheap. As far as donations are concerned (unless I'm mistaken, and please correct me if I am), we should be able to write off such gifts so long as all of the proceeds are going directly to a 501 (c) organization? If you've got any ideas of what should be built (remember to stay grounded) or where this should be built, let's start the discussion here. It doesn't have to be California, but there seems to be a lot of Pelicans based in the SoCal region. (So I volunteered you all!)

how about this...?
what about taking it one step further, how about a east vs. west build-off? Final culmination would be a Pelican event in the midwest somewhere, and the cars are both sold and proceeds go to charity. Kind of like the show on TLC (I think that was the channel)

to make the idea more useable i would suggest getting another party involved... like an auction house, pca, tlc.... even excellence/911... personally I am a huge fan (and support how i can) right to play...

Funny you should mention that East vs. West bit; I had originally thought to do a project "on tour" as in taken to various events and restored as a "how-to" exhibit but the transportation logistics and time investment required would have simply been too much. From a PR standpoint for both Pelican and the charity it would have been golden. Not being able to do that, the next logical idea was TWO projects- one for East Coast Pelicans and one for the Westies. And then I realized that procuring the pieces for two project would just make it twice as difficult . . .

I would think that getting a national/international group involved like PCA or Excellance would be a huge lift to a charity project. I also would think that choosing the charity sooner rather than later, and also one that everyone can indentify with such as a children's charity, should be task #s 1 and 2.
I would bet that there are numerous 911 projects out there that are simply not going to be finished by the current owner(s), and that they also participate here. Choosing the project should be done by a small group of 911 experts who are located in Cali and who can all meet as a group to view the subject vehicle and come to a consensus. I can offer neither time nor expertise, but money for parts (through Pelican of course) would be easy as pie.

Scott approached me with this idea, and I asked him to toss it out to the boards. It did bring back memories of the previous car-put-together that we had a few years ago. I think that was a great and touching (and untold) story. We've been working on some plans for charity events here (starting last year). A bunch of them have been put on hold due to the questionable economy. But this sounds like such a great idea on so many levels, I would love to be involved and help support!

I believe we're close to choosing a charity; I am awaiting word from our benevolent sponsor. As soon as it has been finalized, I will let everyone know. As an aside, if someone is willing to donate shop space for this is would be a great opportunity to have "classes" for Pelicans who have expressed interest in learning certain skills related to maintenance, welding, paint prep, etc.
Just a thought.

This sounds like a good one
This sounds like a good charity recommendation;
http://www.cff.org/ In addition I would think an "early s" would be the recommended build. Great idea, I will be glad to help.

The choice of charity has been narrowed down to a few, and I've checked the status of all of them to make sure they are 501(c)(3) organizations; as it is, I'm just waiting for another opinion before making an announcement. I would like some legal (tax) input as to what can be written of during a project such as these and what type of valuation is necessary for those purposes. Keep the comments coming. We need more input as to the direction of the build.
