Porsche Crest Stainless Steel Webbs CIS Air Box

I have done some research on the board here for the Webbs Design stainless boxes. They seem to be an interesting idea. So that being said I have a couple of questions:

-Would installng this be considered a performance upgrade?
-Is stainless a material I want for an air box?

If you have one installed I would love your first hand opinion.

BTW--I am considering one that is posted on ebay at the moment:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&sspagename=STRK%3AMESELX%3AIT&viewitem=&item=230293439536

Thanks guys, this is my first post and I have loved the insight of this board.

1. There is no performance upgrade that I am aware of>

2. If I could afford it, I would have it. Thus, if you can, you should get it.

I do not have one, had considered one, but after installing the pop-off valve on mine, I have never had any issues.

What year is your SC? Mine is an '83, and I believe that '83 is less prone to hiccups.

I had one installed on my old 73, for quite some time, it was cool looking and probably wouldn't ever crack due to backfire, but thats about it. It had a nifty pop-off valve.

My pop-off valve has been giving me troubles, it has literally blown out of its seat a few times.

That is great to hear... Regarding the trick pop-off valve, how is the spring tension? Is it similar to stock or firmer/softer?

SCSarge,

If you change to SS I don't think you will gain any performance. Whatever you do, though, I would find out why your exst valve is causing you problems. Is the mixture too lean? Is your WUR malfunctioning? Is the valve broken? Does it need to be reglued in place?

Does it use the stock plastic lid?

Can you even see it once installed?

Is it properly seated

The only time I have seen this is when the fins in the air box are not shaved to create a flat surface so that the valve can seat properly, flush with the bottom of the airbox.

My two cents.

Here is a pic from a fellow board member, it looks like the air cleaner and plastic cover fit in the oem location.

Sarge,

The attached picture of the stainless box looks like from Pat Keefe's car. If you need first hand experience contact him. His screen ID is Pat Keefe (???) and a very nice fellow. Good luck.....

I don't understand the reason for this: no performance increase, no visual 'bling' if you can't see it...

What's the draw? More robust?

Benefits are:
-You are installing something that won't crack/explode.
-The pop-off valve design is argued to be better, it won't come unglued etc.
-Overall durability-- You probably won't have to re-install another one.
-I would argue that air induction is better given there is less resistance across stainless steel over plastic.
-Bling

You are on to something there, I just noticed that mine is sitting on top of the fins. Time to shave away...

Good luck!

The later air boxes had metal inserts that would distribute the fuel better at start up. IIRC the CIS gives an extra dose of gas in the air box. The inserts started in 1980, IIRC, you may want to search that.

With the "invention" of the pop off valve, this stainless upgrade is a pretty silly idea. It is probably heavier than the plastic. Maybe it was invented back when the air boxes would explode.

Unless you need a new air box anyway, why bother?

George

Well my pockets are pretty lean at the moment, I don't know if I have the "means" to be the winner. Sounds like it is going to go for a pretty penny.

I would like to see a fellow pelican get it if I don't.

We should take a poll on how many perfectly good brand new plastic air boxes have exploded with a perfectly working pop off valve.

I'll start: 1 here.
