I'd bet that the car wasn't original, concours participation or not. Porsche didn't start putting a whaletail on any narrow-bodied car until the 1975 model year.

I'd wager more tails got put onto cars by their owners over the years than Porsche put them on cars at the factory.

My buddy Chris' 86 Carrera, I like it....

use to belong to Peter Gregg and came with a duck tail, later changed to a still correct Carrera tail. My buddy Jay, who use to own this car, owned both the tails (the duck came with it).

The 1993 Brumos RSA, built using a OEM duck tail.
Another friend use to own this one, got a smoking deal when he bought it from Brumos, turned out, not many people in Florida wanted a 964 with NO AC

with respect to the front spoiler requirement when using a ducktail.
how does that work with the iroc cars? what is going on there that allows that iroc piece to work as a front spoiler? what is the obvious thing that i am not seeing?
my car below.

The original front spoiler first appeared in MY72

It was slightly modified for '73RS so that a valance cooler could be used

'73RS in white , '72 silver

'73RS w/ valance cooler

The 74 IROCs hada deeper version w/ larger valance cooler

Both front and rear spoilers are needed for aero balance, the car will poge w/ just a rear spoiler

my understanding is that the front spoiler tries to prevent air that is hitting the front of the car from being deflected to under the car.
you can see how that could work with the '72 and the '73 spoilers with the bottom lip.
the '74 spoiler looks great - i have one on my car - and for sure it has to work but i don't see with my untrained eye how its design can help prevent deflected air from going under the car.

correct
the '4 is just deeper than the ''73s

stock street '74 Carrera 3.0RS

The non Rs and 930 versions used stock valance and add on lip for the same effect

Ruf used a f/g bumper similar to the '74, IRO, C3RS abd RSR w/ an add on rubber lip

There were also some add f/g lips for the "'72-72

pre '72

Didn't hey modify the tub on the 74RS to allow air to flow over the front mounted oil cooler? The air was diverted under the tub. I had a 74 RS tribute built by Bauman and Max Moritz using all factory parts to 74 RS spec. They also modified the tub for the front oil cooler. It eliminated the ability to use a full sized spare. The car was very planted at its top speed of 155MPH on the autobahn. I ran it flat out back in the 80's for 7 hours straight.

They did the same thing to the tub I had but kept the stock tank. I also had the strut tower brace done the same way along with the early style straight sway bar. One of the biggest mistakes was selling that car. Amazingly fun and analog car to drive. Although the cellulose lacquer paint kept chipping at the edge of the aluminum hood. The front/rear bumpers were paper thin fiberglass and any copy from Air or others at the time were monstrously huge and heavy in comparison. Power to weight made it faster off the line than the 930 of the day.
