So I've got the Rennline bushing in. Just checking that there's no need for lubrication? And the set screws are simply there for removal?

I have a rattle in my steering column. It doesn't have any vertical or horizontal movement to speak of, but I ordered a Rennline bushing from Pelican, thinking I should just replace the bushing. Taking it apart I see that the visible part of the old bushing is intact. I poked it with a pick and it seems flexible, not brittle as is reported by others here. The thing is, the steering shaft is turning inside the bushing. The inner bearing race isn't turning at all. It even appears that someone has put grease on it. Has anyone else experienced this?

I'm torn between putting it back together and letting sleeping dogs lie, or replacing the bushing anyway. Advice?

I just received the Rennline bushing. Does anyone know if it’s self-lubricating or if I should apply a lubricant? Thanks

It's plastic, delrin I believe. I have one on the shelf for my 1986 930. A quick look at delrin specs says coefficient of friction to steel is .1-.3. Keeping it clean and dry will increase its life. Ask yourself, what's the lube I might apply going to collect in 20 years.

I believe he sold the rights to Rennline, and they are now producing it.

I found some steering bearings on RENNLINE, but nothing that resembles this part. Anyone have a link to purchase??

A couple of weeks ago, I decided to finally undertake installing dashboard LED lights that I ordered many years ago. While installing the LEDs, I notice about 1/4 inch play in the steering wheel, up and down, and left and right, but not rotational. I ordered the Rennline replacement bushing, and the bushing I received was white, rather than black as shown in all the pictures in this thread, but otherwise the same.

When I removed the steering wheel, I was surprised to find a black replacement bushing shown in the pictures in this thread, and no star-washer nor crumbling original bushing. I bought my 1984 911 about 13 years ago, so the black replacement bushing is at least 13 years old. A question I have is does the replacement black bushing have a useful lifetime?

I easily removed the black replacement bushing by turning in the two screws using a 5/16 Allen. The screws contact the bearing which forced the bushing outwards to the point where I could remove it with my fingers. The screws that accompanied the new white Rennline bushing had to be screwed in to the proper non-protruding depth. The new white replacement bushing was easily inserted. I’m waiting for a new circlip that I just ordered, to complete the installation. A tip: when ordering the replacement bushing, also order a new circlip, which is part number 113415531.

When there was no bushing in place, the steering shaft could be easily moved with my fingers. When I put in the new white replacement bushing, I couldn’t move the steering shaft with my fingers. I’m waiting for receipt of the new circlip before putting the steering wheel back on, and testing for play with the steering wheel. It looks like the old, original circlip was reused with the black replacement bushing, and didn’t have the elasticity that instructions and YouTube video warned about, when I removed it.

Has anybody ever had their steering wheel jam while in a corner?

I have. And I had to fight it to get the car straight. I almost crashed.

I really believe it is because the crappy plastic upper bearing i.d. disintegrates and the pieces fall into the ignition lock mechanism. Many people have had luck with these workaround sleeves but the proper fix is to pull that upper bearing and clean out the plastic bits or better yet pull the column and clean it out and replace both bearings. It's a full day job but worthwhile with the peace of mind.

My steering wheel moves up and down and I believe it is about time for a fix. I have read several old threads about this problem and saw that Mitch Leland developed a bushing kit better than the metal sleeve offered by Porsche.

The kit was one spring, one shim or washer and the bushing (year 2010). The actual kit showned in this thread has nothing to do with the Mitch Lelandīs.

Any help?

Thanks
