Flag mirrors gone - welcome Vitaloni Sebring Mach 1 Mirror

A stock, well-maintained 911 is a wonderful thing. At the same time I'm a big fan of anything Porsche Motorsport, and I think 964s look great with some hotrod touches, RGruppe style.

I like the aero mirrors but they cost a lot and need to be painted, plus I think they look a little too big on a narrow body coupe (I wish they were 7/8 size). It's a standard upgrade, but that's too easy...

In looking at pictures of old RSRs I noticed this cool looking little mirror called Vitaloni Sebring and wondered if it could replace my flag mirror? Unfortunately there are a bunch of holes in the door hidden by the mirror base (so Ruf scoop mirrors are out also). Sitting on the door, the V. Sebring mirror body looked too small to cover the holes after installation?

Then I saw a piture of a PS Autoart backdated 964, that car had a mirror base similar to a stock car, but it had a small, retro, round mirror on top. Maybe I could mount the Sebring mirror ontop of the flag mirror base? Well, after some fabrication it turned out just as I'd hoped! I actually prefer to have the mirror sit on the flag base, as it raises the mirror up above the door curve and now the mirror sits flat, instead of following the door body.

I thing has a very nice subtle retro look that most people wouldn't notice at all, and some Porschephiles might smile acknowledging the unique rading of Porsche's motorsports parts bin... It's a different look on a 964, but it's a mirror that is part of Porshe's history so I think the styles all ties together nicely?

I mounted the mirrors last night and only did a quick drive down the road to take some pictures this morning, so they aren't fully adjusted. I have a direct line of sight to both mirrors, but visibility is reduced... I can live with it! Getting rid of the flags means the car is a couple inches narrower, so the car looks even smaller!

How was the installation? Did you use stock holes? Any other drilling?

They look great. Can you post more pics of the base when you get a chance. Thanks

Great idea.

Looks like you're mounting the mirror to the stock base. Do you have any pictures what's involved with that? Did you have to drill holes?

Thanks

base pictures

As far as mounting goes... I separated the flag base from the mirror body, cut the power/heat lines and used the stock un-modified base. I had to drill a large 1" hole on the bottom surface of the Sebrings, allowing the mirror to tightly sit on top of the flag base the would normally go into the top of the mirror. I'll upload install pictures this weekend...

Thanks,
Udo

Very, very nice work, 911jettat! I may go this route...

I pulled the flag mirrors off my '88 last winter and installed Ruf/935 mirrors, with d/f tape. I wanted to see if I could live with them before doing a permanent installation. Well, I liked them, so it was time to address the door holes. I figured I'd fabricate some nice thin cover plates and paint them body color. Tried several versions of that and couldn't get anything to really fit right or look right. So I've been ready to weld up the door holes and repaint the doors. That would be the first irreversable thing I've done to the car, and I'm a little reluctant. But what the hell, I'm so far down the slippery slope, it's never going back to stock.

Do you know - IF you had mounted directly to the door, would they have covered the old mirror holes?

However, these look really good and would be an acceptable compromise. Might go this way. Thanks for the post!

Brilliant.

I just might steal your idea!!

Thanks for posting!

It sounds like Pegasus are gonna' wonder why mirrors have started flying off the shelves all of a sudden.

I like the look and a neat project ... may consider doing it.

If this is done for weight saving ... I think 1 less cheeseburger may be easier

And they offer the same mirror with convex glass. That might be good for the passenger side.

If I had to do it again I'd try these ones first!

My thought exactly, two of these for $160 and some work is a damn good deal for my race car and I think they look better than the stock aero mirrors as far as wind resistance goes... I'd like to see more on the exact process to mount them to the flag base.

I would like more information about what it takes to mount the Vitaloni to the stock base.

FWIW,....Take careful note about WHERE the mirror was mounted on the Brumos 935,.....well behind the A-pillar for drag reduction.
