I think I recall Redford driving a 911 in an older film called Downhill Racer. Anyone know what year that car was?

Downhill Racer was 1969, I think. So the 911 is probably 68 or maybe even a short-wheelbase car.

'68 would be a short-wheelbase car; WB lengthened on '69 models.

I would like to comfirm that PORSCHE BROTHERS is full of it. I know him personally and can tell you that his perspective is very twisted. I think he should be banned from posting replies on any and all rear engined Porsche topics. However, he does happen to be an authority in 928s.
I apologize to him for posting this, but its the truth. Happy Holidays to all!!! |

An inexcusable error on my part. As penance, I will re-read Excellence Was Expected 3 more times this weekend! |

Obin, Maybe I'm missing something here, but I don't see 'Downhill Racer' on the list? I think I've got it on video tape and I could get the details if you need them. -- Curt

Kurt -
Thanks for setting the record staight. I'm a relatively new Potomac region member and I had no idea that a moviestar was amongst us! I'll be sure to stop by for an autograph at the next club event. Doug '81 SC Coupe |

I think I saw a 928 very briefly in a parking lot in the Bond flick
'Goldfinger'. I think it was when the character Goldfinger was leaving the horse race track. Any Bond finatics out there who can verify this Porsche sighting? JoeF |

Highly unlikely that a 928 was in Goldfinger. Porsche was in the middle of the process of developing the 911 in 1963 (928 didn't see the light of day until mid '70s), and the hot Porsche at that time was the 356C (SC, et al).

Don,
Maybe it was another Bond flick. I will see if I can find it . It is a real quick shot and as I remember it you can only see only the roof line of the 928. If I find it I will let you know. JoeF |

Closure on the "Spy Game" 911
Just to provide closure to this thread, the highest bid for the 911 on Ebay was $16,200!
Especially considering the "50 foot" respray! Surprisingly, the reserve was higher still and so there was no-sale. I know that I wouldn't bid that much for that car in that condition. But it is all academic now since the seller still owns the car and is now looking for "Private offers". Yikes!

follow up on Ebay Porsche
Kurt's Post is correct. I heard about his 912 being used in the movie earlier this year from Tim Berardelli who built both the original and current motors for the car. Since the Ebay seller "Premier Props" has actually now sold the car they been reported to both Ebay and FBI for consumer fraud. Although their Porsche was one of 4 used in the movie it was not driven by Robert Redford and is not the "Only One" as they have tried to claim.
Additional car history: I did a ground-up rolling chassis restoration for Tim and then purchased it to finish it up for myself. After 2 years of restoration I got to drive it for a grand total of 15 minutes after it was purchased by Kurt. It has become a beautiful example of a 69 912 under his care and attention to detail. A car not to be taken lightly on the track. The car has been seen on the track at Summit Point years, ago driven by Dick Naublaud (pardon the spelling) prior to Tim's owning it. Credit goes to Performance Auto Crafters (Barney Squires) of VA for the final 2 stage urethane paint job. |

Hey, does this mean us 912 owners get a little respect now?

Well here is my 2c...
Seems history gets muddied over time things left out things added ![]() Here in the UK I run the 912 Register for the PCGB, we had a phone call from a film production company, they wanted some early 911 / 912's for a 'casting'. At Shepperton Studios the director would choose a car for the film they were shooting. So myself and a number of Register members turned up on the day. Tony and his entourage toured the lot and chose my car. They had my car as the principal for 3 months. All the shots you see with Bob driving at the beginning and end of the film were shot in the UK at a Pharmacutical head Office in North London. (Listen to the alternate ending on the DVD for the actual recorded engine sound, 912 not 911) After all the UK photography was complete they had to find a similar car in the States for all the long shots/freeway. So, I think its fair to say my car was used for the Bob driving shots and Kurts for the long shots. Any other car that claims to be used was either a spare or never used for the principal photography. Obviously non of this is that important, untill someone tries to bump up the price of their car with implausible 'truths'. Gavin
