Horn options

I replaced the twin horns with that small euro air horn that Griot's Garage sells. Worked really well easy install where originals were.
But after two years its just a low buzz. I think it could not take all the road grime.
Anyone out there have an idea on some loud air horns that are durable and can take the beating, or maybe a different location to put them?

Thank you
Barclay

Try FIAMM puck-style horns....available at FLAPS....and point them DOWN, ( not forward). Or any puck style but don't point them facing front.

Agreed. I also have the WOLO horn installed and the instructions indicate the opening must be angled downward so as not to ingest water or road-grime.

Horns

I too had to replace the original horns. Before purchasing, I had an opportunity to hear how new stock horns sounded and was not impressed. I was impressed however with the price of the new stock horns.
I removed the old horn set. I used the existing bracket as-is (no mods whatsoever) and bolted in aftermarket horns.
Twice (or more) the sound at half (or much less) the price.
I highly recommend it.

New Old Stock

By "new stock" I mean NOS (new old stock). I seem to remember it costing a few hundred. I can't imagine the aftermarkets cost me much at all (it's been a few years).
Don't remember what brand I purchased. You can use pretty much any 12 vdc unit. You basically just bolt it onto the car's bracket.
Of course you will have to bear the burden of knowing that, under your car, resides a non-Porsche part.

I bought a pair of new 996 horns for about $80. Same hi/lo harmonics as the SC horns, sound pleasant and polite on a quick tap - get penetrating pretty fast. Fraction of the weight of the trumpets.

Made up an small 4-wire adapter harness for the fancy new weatherproof terminals to adapt to the spades on the factory harness, bolted them in around the wheel in about 15 minutes. Pointed them down and forward so they're out of any spray from the wheel.

It's been 3 years/20,000 miles now and they still work great - yes, I drive in the rain.

You could put pretty much anything on - even Ford or GM horns - but why would you want to do that?

Are the euro horns any different than the ones for North America of that vintage (80's)?

Funny story

The reason I decided to replace the original anemic horns was that I was driving in a parking lot one day in my 911 and saw two parked cars across from each other both start backing up at the same time. Neither appeared to see the other. I immediately started honking the horn. It was actually kinda embarrassing. I think I've heard louder horns on bicycles.
Sadly neither car heard my little pissy horns and they ended up backing into each other.
I decided then that, for the good of all mankind, I needed to replace the horns.

Suggestions

I would imagine Autpzone, Pep Boys, etc. probably have them on shelf. On line try Ebay or J.C.Whitney.
Any that you find should be easily adaptable.

Found The Fiamm Horn at Pep Boys, went for the high tone.
I was wondering if you can splice into the horn wires and install two of them, one high tone and one low tone or is that overkill? or will two be to much electrical draw?

I believe most do come in pairs anyway. I think a pair of horns sound much better than a single unit.
Don't worry about amperage draw.
