Question on footwell heaters

I need to replace the things in the footwells that have to do with allowing heat onto your feet......first step would be figuring out what theyre called hahah, So does anybody know what the names of what they're called? (there's one in each footwell in the top corner....they look like blower motors....the dial in between the seats controls them i believe)

Why do you have to replace them?

Have you checked the fuses?

Also, please apprise us of your model/year.

Didn't your mother teach you not to answer a question with a question?

He simply asked what they're called. Answer: footwell blowers.

They are called "noisy little bsaterds"

You can take they out and clean and oil them if they are not working.

Those are BOOST motor/blowers so you can get more heat quickly to the windshield, they have NOTHING to do with footwell area heating.

The electric blower in the engine compartment and the engine cooling blower are the source(s) for heated footwell forced airflow.

And Porsche....in their infinite (electrical) wisdom...did NOT fuse these suckers until 87-88 or so. I added them in my 85. Idiots ( Porsche....that is).

So you can't "check" something that might not be there. The original poster didn't identify the model year car he has.

They actually are fused, just not individually.

I got to replace my driver's side (footwell blower) as the lubing process will no longer provide relief. Time to change her out. Since I've an '89, I've a fuse on each one.

Nothing to do with footwell heat? Say what?

That is like saying "I have one big fuse on the main feeder from my battery to all my loads"...... and therefore feeling protected??

????

In proper electrical design, each "load" needs to be fused, so each footwell blower should have had a fuse. Furthermore I'm looking at the electrical wiring diagram for an 85 ( my previous car), and I see that the already overloaded 25A fuse ( air conditioner circuit) feeds power to a fan relay, which in turn feeds the 2 blowers. That's it...no additional fuses unless you count the 25A unit ( which is rated much too high for the footwell blower amp loads.)

Not a good design.

Porsche also doesn't fuse the front A/C blower until 87 which has caused some distress and meltdown. They don't routinely fuse the control side of relays, only the power side, and only "at times". They don't fuse any of the dash lighting either...

Recall also that Porsche forces full headlight current through the dinky steering column switch, without use of relays, which has caused unnecessary headlight circuit failure. Another area of "less-than-acceptable" practice.

Altogether....Porsche does a very poor job of combining electrical loads and to fuse certain pieces that should be fused.

As a point of reference, my 86 Carrera with June 1986 build date had the footwell blowers fused from the factory. So, the change occurred sometime in 86 before the end of the 86 model year.

and basically everytime I turned them on, id get a little smoke come out and a burning wire smell.....so I just unplugged the electrical connector on each of them and whalaa, no more smell....and no more footwell heat haha, basically all a/c and heat are shot to **** on this car, I already dropped my whole a/c system a year back, suppose I'll go ahead and get heat back for the winter as an early christmas gift hah

You might simply have dried-out motor bearings. They are covered with a felt material that I soaked in oil and re-assembled to avoid the "motor-squeel" and the later..."locked up" motors....which undoubteldy is what you are "smelling" as the current load gets high and starts to heat things up. OK....possible that the "change" occured in 86 instead of 87.....should be seeing 10A ATO type blade fuses alongside the motor body.

Here's the link I used.

It worked well for me.

On the home page, click on search>Posts>ibeaudoin

His post provides clear, step by step instruction, on servicing footwell blower motors.

Also VW uses the same motor.

If needed, Email me for the link.

Good luck,

Gerry

86 911 targa:

I appreciate your posting, but the manner in which you show the post makes it almost impossible for the rest of us to open it or follow it.

Why not just post the title so we can open and read ?--->

He may have been wanting to encourage people to learn how the search function works?
