Why put carpet in the garage?

Just wondering. I went to a guy's house this weekend and he had carpeting under his M3. I can't figure out why he'd want carpet under there. Any P-car owners have shag in the garage?

Garage
I had junk carpet in mine for a while. Concrete floors are cold and don't warm up at all. As an added bonus dropped bolts.don't roll too far. It's a pain in the butt moving a jack on carpet though. Now I just have a couple 4 by 4 squares I drag around to sit or lay on.

Carpet would have to be non-combustible to be legal. Building Code/insurance thing.

I have a piece that the 911 sits on. We had carpet installed last year so I used the old for the garage. It does make it nicer when crawling under the car.

My floor is coated but it still is cold and hard.

I've heard that it helps tires from flatspotting, too. My car sits during the winter so if it helps, so be it.

Soaks up oil too.

I use a piece in my garage. Especially nice when working on car - slides easily, comfy for the back or knees.

I've got some discarded rugs from the shop. The ones Cintas uses with the rubber backing and edges. They work great and they pretty much gave them to me.

I've had indoor/outdoor commercial grade carpeting in my garage for the past 15 years. I love it because I do more detailing of my cars rather than mechanical work. If I do an oil change or something similiar, I've got plastic covers to cover the carpet. Garage is heated and air conditioned, so it's used year round.

As a former alter boy, I can tell you, it's much easier on the knees.

I can appreciate the benefit of carpet on the garage floor, but my concern is more in regard to fluid leaks and drips. How would you clean it out of the carpet?

I would think a product such as this would be better:

Utility Tiles, 18 x 18-in. | Canadian Tire

Unfortunately it is much pricier than scrap carpet.

I have a throw rug that I haul around for when I have to kneel or sit to work on the car. Which, by the way, is much less likely now that I have a 4 post lift.

Carpet stores have small carpet samples that eventually become obsolete and can be purchased for next to nothing. I put one under each tire of my garage cars. No flat spots and helps keep the garage floor clean. When they get too dirty to clean, just throw them out. Watch out in the winter in unheated garages. The carpets can freeze to the tire and....

The cars stay on concrete, but I've got a large section of the garage leading into the house carpeted, so that 99% of any crud on shoes does not get tracked into the house.

I've got carpet in the airplane hangar. Looks good, and also nice when I get on my knees under the wings to drain a fuel sample out of the tanks before flight. There is a big drip pan under the engine in case any oil drips from the breather. The carpet has been down for quite a while, and still looks good.

Growing up, a neighbor had his entire garage carpeted, but that's because it housed a couple spotless Ferraris. The Dino sat out on the street- It didn't even deserve a spot on the driveway.
