Thanks for all the advice guys. I dont know what the car currently runs I'll ask the previous owner what he used to put in it. I have worked on porsche's before, my first car in high school was a 924s that was given to me not running, and it was either make it work, or walk to school. So i feel confident under the hood. I also dident realize the car took 10quarts

Thanks for every thing
dave

Somebody put the pin back in the grenade!

Dave have fun with the new car. You like the rest of us on this journey started with the simplest questions first. You will find out even the simple gets worked over here. Its because we dig the cars. Good Luck and find a mechanic that others trust so you can too.

In a Turbo I'd only use a synthetic due to the heat and the turbine coking problems with normal oils. I've used Mobil 1 20-50 for over 30 years in 2 turbos and 4 or 5 normally aspirated and have never had a problem. And that is in Texas heat. I think they've recently switched formulations to the extended service 15-50. Discontinuing the normal 20-50 precisely because of the additional additives for our older engines.

I wouldn't trust a Mobil product to wipe my ass with.

It looks like the John Deere Tractor oil (plus 50) has a big add package, 1700+ zinc and 1400+ phosphorus plus some moly for good measure. This fellow runs it in a boat. The oil looks very suitable for our air cooled engines. A plus would be, we can get this oil at any John Deere store.

Any thoughts?

i know we usually go over automotive uoa's here, but i wanted to throw this one into the mix, to show why i use john deere plus 50 motor oil.
the engine is a john deere marine 6076 (466) with 9798 hrs. engine is either run at wot or idle (lots of idle time, probably 30-40%) i have samples dating back to '92 on this particular engine, i'm only going to post most recent.
sample has 254 hrs., i generally run this oil to 350 hrs., but boat is layed-up until mid-april and i always put her to bed with fresh fluids
oil; john deere plus 50 15w-40
oilscan; through deere
sample date; 12/5/09
make-up oil; 10 qts (due to extensive ideling, hasn't changed since new)

It probably does.

Now the real question is .... for which Porsches? After all, since 1998, Porsche did not build any flat tappet air cooled cars. And an oil ok for water cooled rooler tappet cars is not necessairily good for our cars.

For me it is lack of transparency.

At a fundemental level Mobil 1 is a good motor oil since is is formulated with a good bse stock (Type IV). It is the games with the additive package they played that has me not trusting them going forward.

Even today, they do not disclose the necessary quantitative data in their Product Data Sheets to help me know if I am getting what I want.

Mobil lost my trust when they changed formulations early in the transition from SL to SM oils but did not document the change nor notify the end users. In fact they insisted all was ok yet shortly therafter made some more changes to address the outcry.

Other oil manufacturers were more forthright with their data.

That is enough for me, but as I am fond of saying: your car, your money, your choice.

With the money I've saved using Castrol GTX, I can pay for a sweet rebuild when my engine blows up!

Mobil1 1 15w50 is getting harder to find reasonable priced.. walmart no longer carries it and neither does target... which leaves you to the dreaded "part stores".... I just paid $110 for m1 on an oil change....

I sat down and did a little meditation and it occurred to me that even for $150 Id spend the money on something that has never failed me, racing, or in any other car that I "tracked" etc... When I did my valves on my P car I inspected the cam lobes.. notta.. nothing.. smooth as a babies butt.

Mobil has an explanation of why reduced zinc with phosphates added will not cause flat tappet wear.. you can choose to believe them or not... but, please.. please do NOT try and wipe your ass with M1.. I agree with Joe Bob. This is not the intended use of the product and Mobil discourages use of M1 for anything other than its intended use.

Brad Penn on the other hand is capable of ANYTHING.. you may wipe your ass with it, you are fully covered by the Brad Penn warranty and prayers will be said on your behalf when the Brad Penn cult has its annual meeting.

Hey Romonesfreak... no issues with oil pressure on a 90F day? Id really like to run M1 high mileage but I've been afraid to do it... and you can't get it in anything more than I think 30wt.
