I'd have it professionally inspected, but it sure looks like a 993:

I'll add to Chris' reply.

"IF IT SEEMS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, IT PROBABLY IS."

It's not like the seller is someone who doesn't know what they have there.

They're not the old lady down the street selling "A 63 Chevrolet- $2000" in the paper which you decide to check out and it turns out to be a old dusty split-window Vette.

Just my exaggerated $.02

There seem to be an abundance of white 933s on eBay and Rennlist for well under $40k these days. For $34k I'd rather get one that's cosmetically perfect, but may need a few oil leaks repaired. I emailed one such eBay seller, actually a Houston area dealer, and got no reply. The ad mentioned a serious oil leak, but stated the car was still under warranty. I just wanted to know whether the warranty covered the leak. I think any oil leak would be preferrable to structural or cosmetic damage - and more likely to be really repairable. But then I'm just starting to get serious about researching the 993 market.

No such thing as a good deal? Sure there is. I've sold cars for more than I paid several times, and now am doing the same thing with houses.

I have a friend who thinks it's crazy to buy and sell houses- that if a house is cheap, obviously, something is wrong with it. Well, I could listen to him and stick my hands in my pockets, or go out and make it happen. "Good deals" don't happen every day, but when they do, you've got to jump quick. I'm making some extra money, my realtor is making money, and we're both having fun.

No such thing as a good deal? (Part two)

What about an aluminum deck lid for $50?

Okay- someone else can have the soapbox now.

That car is no bargain. It has had at least 3 owners (original, plus 2 since the fire), it had a fire, and it appears minimally optioned. It also has 57k miles.

There are a lot of nice 993s out there at prices that have become more reasonable, so no need to settle for one like this.

There is a 993 board on Rennlist that is pretty active, so you can get a good sense of the market, and advice on individual cars.

Good luck.

Sure there are plenty of good deals out there. I would just need to be real convinced it's a good deal before wiring a deposit of a few grand across the country to a stranger for a car I hadn't seen or driven yet. Everyone here has an eBay horror story to tell. I'm still licking my wounds on a $475 Fender Twin amp I got screwed on. I can't imagine how bad a lemon Porsche on eBay would sting. I will someday snatch up a great deal on a 993 - just not ready to do it yet.

According to Bruce Anderson in Excellence, $34K is about right for a 96 993 in poor condition. Considering this is a fire victim, minimum options, and has passed through a few hands in a relatively short period of tims, I would classify this as a 993 that is not in "good" condition. I was looking for 993 a couple months ago and there are plenty with higher mileage, one owner no wrechs for the same price.

I saw a VERY clean '95 993 with 57K eventually sell for $35K. No mechanical or cosmetic issues at all. And that was 2 months ago...the market seems even softer now.

There are plenty of deals out there if your'e patient, but this particular doesn't seem like a deal to me...
