Angry tick, tick, tick.....

Ok,

My car started to make ticking noise emanating from the right rear wheel. Based on the archives, I think I have a problem with my bearings. Lifted the rear last night, spun the tire/wheel and no noise.

Before I buy the right tool to replace the RR bearing, who wants to rent me theirs!!!

Oh, just in case I am misdiagnosing my problem, I would appreciate any feedback.

In the meantime, let me surf our sponsor's site and scope out how much lighter my wallet would be.

I'll bet dollars to donuts your wheel bearings are not the problem. Wheel bearings don't tick. They howl.

I just finished discussing my OXS system in a nearby thread (Car is Trying to Freak Me Out) and I'm reminded of the mystery ticking I fixed two years ago. It fooled me into thinking it was a wheel noise, since its rhythm was with the wheel rotation. And it sounded like it was coming from the front. It turned out to be the mileage counter for the OXS light.

Do this: Raise the rear of the car and put it on jackstands. Start the engine, put the car in first gear and let out the clutch. If the ticking noise is heard, you need to disarm your OXS counter. Remove the speedo or clock. The counter is a rectangular thing with a button for purposes of resetting the OXS light. You don't need the OXS light, as all it does is come on every X miles (where X= 30K I believe).

You didn't mention the year of your car but if you have a mechanical speedometer, I would check the speedo cable if I were you. I had a similar noise coming from the rear - a regular ticking noise and I thought it was my CV joints. Well, after removing/inspecting/cleaning/re-packing/re-installing the CV joints, the noise was still there!!

After checking everything else, I removed the speedo cable and discovered that was my problem.
Check it out! Good luck.

Dang, I sure am all confused now!

More info for u guys which might help me:

car is 83SC.
Speedo is NOT mechanical.

Ticking noise started yesterday afternoon. Would you believe that along with the right rear ticking sound, I had a left rear flat! Bummer, and CostCo would not fix z-rated tires (for liability purposes).

This morning the ticking was present after driving 10 miles. The first 10 miles no noticeable ticking (clicking) sound.

This afternoon, on my home (30 miles total), the darn ticking sound WAS NOT present.

Gentlemen, the ticking sound is VERY LOUD. I thank you for the speedo input, but thinking logically the speedo could never generate that much noise. I could be wrong. I'll check anyway.

Give me mo' input!

ticking noise ???

May be wayyyy too simple but have you checked for debri in the tire. A screw head slapping the pavement as the tire rotates would make a ticking sound. (recent experience !!)

Try taking it out of gear and coasting.
Or lightly apply the brake and maintain speed (not for long though)
Does it do it going around corners
Does it vary with speed/load gear
Look at your CV boots are they torn
Hardware in the tire to match the flat on the other side
Is your stereo capable of drowning out the noise
The above are questions to help id the problem

Hey Cab83_750!

Any resolution on the mysterious ticking? I think I've got the start of what you have and am interested in knowing if you solved it.

I have an '83 and have a similar ticking. Try this - have the car coasting and turn off the ignition. Mine actually stopped ticking, which told me it was the OXS sensor. Mine actually sounded as if it was coming from the front end, but is was under the dash

At first, the ticking was very very intermittent. Then, ticking would start for a few seconds, stop for a long while, then start again. My ticking was very very intermittent.

I concurred with everybody about the CV joint because ultimately the ticking was loud enough for me to pinpoint that it was the right CV joint.

Good luck!

I remember some time ago a ticking noice coming from the rear and found it to be a loose center cap on the alloy wheel. Maybe this is your problem?
