Under-dash speakers - anyone ever installed this?

the Moch One units are handy but are about the worst way possible to mount a speaker for HiFi
I inherited one from a PO in my first 911 and removed it |

I have one in my '68. Not the best sound in the world...on the other hand, it's not the worst sound either.
If you're looking for a way to catch a little news or weather...maybe some tunes from time to time without cutting up pristine door panels or doning something else that a little too "noticeable" it's not that bad an option.

In my car, a PO had installed large stereo speakers in an upholstered fiberglass rear deck thing in the rear window. It was hooked up to a new Sony radio/CD/etc unit in the dashboard. I took the whole rear deck and speakers out.
I still have that radio, but with no speakers attached. I'm thinking that this car didn't have stereo in the first place, so how about installing one speaker in the grill in the top of the dash? In a car this loud, why on earth would I concern myself with hi-fi? I'm the occasional news and weather type anyway, and never listen to music while driving. Has anyone gone this route?

Riding in my SC the other day and my 11 y/o daughter asked me why Porsche did not make a cover for all the underdash wires that were showing. I had no answer but have thought about the Moch one without speakers to cover this area. Be interested to know if anyone has installed it and how it looks ... a pic would be nice

my buddy had one of these in a 912 he picked up, again, not the best sound in the world, and i thought it looked pretty cheap...i would have it covered in leather or something to match a bit better...but it is a cool concept
i spent alot of time going through my dash wires and cleaning them up, so i dont have anything hanging or visible |

I find it incredibly optimistic that y'all are willing to make it harder to access the wiring under the dash. I'm jealous. So far, two months into owning this thing and I have far more time UNDER the wheel than I do BEHIND it.

I just ordered the M3000 and it came in today. I am thinking about swapping decided it for the version with the speaker cutouts (but no speakers). Basically my plan is to mount the tweeters there and put the mids in the door. Or I might do a 3 component. Still working on it...

I put one in the red rocket years ago as the gutted doors have no speakers. Great way to cover up a lot of ugly and have stealth sterio. The greatest sound my car produces will never come from a radio so i don't care about perfect sound. I made a bracket for the Mach 1 so it pops out in seconds and stays put rigid when in place.

Here's my thoughts on the issue:
1972 never came with door speakers, so there's not really any way of wiring them, at least not a clean way. Though if anyone has any suggestions I'm open, because I'm installing new carpet and RS door panels this winter. Right now I have 2 mid-grade speakers on the rear parcel shelf and 2 mid-grade speakers in the dash (where there was originally a single speaker). Sound quality is poor, to say the least. I'd like to improve sound quality without a) spending $1000 and b) installing all sorts of crap in the back. My hope is that this under-dash unit will help with two decent size speakers up front, plus get a small sub to put under the passenger seat, something like this: Kenwood - KSC-SW10

I've got one in The White Rat with the tweeters mounted on the dash, a Clover enclosure with two-ways and a Subaru sub under the passenger seat. They are hooked up to a stealth Sony deck and my iPod via the deck's aux inputs
Not the greatest but no speaker holes in the RS door panels nor the rear shelf. What can I say - I like my tunes. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Tweeters and mid-range are directional. Pointing them toward the floor isn't ideal.
Subs are non-directional. Can be in the trunk, underdash, rear floor or under the seat(s). Ideally, tweeters should be mounted high, but in close proximity to the mid-range speaker. The best compromise might be door-mounting both. Here's my setup. Pretty typical, with flat speaker covers to clear the window winder; tweeters in the Perlon kick panel (crossovers behind). Drilled wire path in door hinge panel and routed through color-matched HD shrink wrap for protection into the interior under the door bulb. ![]() Overlook the obvious product placement. ![]() Sherwood |

mount the high quality speakers to the metal frame with a bit of resilient material between; put some dampening on the door skin depending on your trade-off between sound quality and wt.; put one of those special pads behind each speaker; put some special material over the door fame (interior side) - it will substitute for a plastic barrier; use some cylindrical tubing for any penetrations in the special barrier material & for actuating rods etc. & stuff a little foam in there; cut a hole in the inner door panel for the speaker and mount the speaker frame to it for better sound use separates, and put the tweeter high in the door with its own hole or even better, put the tweeters in special little enclosures you make at the very corner of the dash/windshield use decent wire & a quality amp cannot stand to put holes in the door's leading edge??? - then run the wires just behind the door panel want a heavier, more lugubrious car? add a woofer (car audio people usually call it a sub-woofer, but it isn't really) for better sound than the above either use high quality headphones or buy a Lexus |

I would be interested in "seeing" the version without speakers. It would be nice to cover up the wiring if it looks factory and clean.

Mat, thanks but I don't think yours will fit my car - the SC dash is different from the earlier dash.

Mine was a disgrace so I decided to pull all the wiring out without cutting cables and wrapped in a matte cloth tape, making sure to wrap it evenly and in the same direction (this way it is easier to unwrap if necessary). I wrapped it in such a way to leave about 2mm so that the color coding of the wiring was still visible. I also grouped the wires according to the destination/device and in some cases re-routed the wires to look less like the bowl of spaghetti my wife is cooking for me tonight. Strategically placed cable ties tuck the wires away nicely. I found this made a huge difference to the aesthetics without hopefully giving myself or any future owner a headache trying to troubleshoot electrical issues
