Thanks 930dude. Yep all the glass is going to be removed. After the flares the next step is the sunroof delete. Hence the green 993 roof in the corner. Wayne .. I have a short video of a walk around of the car that shows much better lines and angles of the flares. I just have to figure out how to post it.

So the back was finished up yesterday. Rethought the original idea. Looks alot better ... IMHO. Got the tail light seal lip done too. Started to prep to weld the flares on today. Added a little metal to the flares to be able to better attach the bumper later. Will trim it to about 1 inch or so. Flares are great but they do involve a little TLC on how they match up to the body , ie adding metal for a better fit. Not the same as the turbo flares. Details for later in the game. Removed paint and galv coating. Should be an interesting day tmrw.

So after a long silent moment starting at the car tonight .... and a nice pour of scotch to calm my nerves I got the courage to start cutting into the rear fender of my perfectly good 911. Hours of measuring, adjusting, pushing , pulling all climaxed to the first cut. It was an event. Once I saw the lower metal start to fall and the top flare drop into place like most say it does I stopped and had another drink. Realizing what time it was and that I didnt want to light the torch up to later turn it off and not be finished I stopped. Sunday ... Sunday feels very good and I feel much better. A few pics of post cutting.

You're gas welding? How's that working out? (other than the fact that you ran out of O2)

So I got more oxygen today. Got another bottle of acetylene as well. Started to tack in the drivers side rear flare. Went pretty smooth. Took a while but Im pretty happy with the results. Just have to finish weld the joint and Ill move over to the passenger side. Should be little to no filler .. always a plus
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Looks like Ill at least get the rear flares finished up before I head back to sea for 60 days. My deadline for this year for being finished should still look good.

Thanks buddy. Its a slow process oxy welding bit once its tacked in ... the rest is a breeze. Im looking forward to doing the fronts because I can tack/weld them on the bench once they are fitted and cleco'd on. I can get alot more comfortable. I was dying on the last 6-12 inches on both edges of the flare. My comfy office chair didnt go that low, lol. Hope to have some more pics over the next couple days.

So to update the thread. Just got home from shipping last week. Had to put some shelving up in the shop to help organize everything that showed up for the car while I was at sea. So The rear flares are completely welded on. Just need to dress them. The weeks goal is to get the front flares welded on and fit the rear bumper. Next week goal is to tackle the roof. Few pics in better light. I wanted to make sure the rear arches are symmetrical to the wheel. ITs tough because the rear end is jacked up due to no weight in the rear. The Tbar holes are alot smaller on the rsr flares vs the carrera's. They line up and are within 1cm of each other when I took measurements again. I dont think it will matter to much .... OCD, its a curse.

Thanks Wayne. Not much warpage at all. Gotta ove the little mecco torch. I dropped the tbars yesterday to lower the car all the way down to see where the tires would sit in the fenders. The passenger side is a little further forward then the drivers side. The wheels sit alittle further back in these flares then the turbo flares where they seem to be centered. Hows it look now?

I see your concern about centring but when I did mine I found that it was an optical illusion. Once the rear bumper was installed, the wheel moved to the centre.
Mock it up and see if that makes a difference. I suspect that it will be perfect.

Thanks Wayne. Yeah, I completely understand what your saying. I measured and measured to get it right and symmetrical on both side but I have a feeling that because they are hand built flares and not pressed stamped fenders they might have some slight differences side to side. I was freaking out a bit because it is off now is the time to correct it. When the ride correct ride height is set the wheel will come forward just a bit too, I hope. Hows your RSR .... enjoying it much?

Don't make any changes until that rear bumper is mocked up. I doubt that the wheel needs to come forward at all.
That's the optical illusion that I talked about, and it will probably go away with the bumper in place. As for my 73, the story gets a little amusing now. I brought the car home, and have spent the last month out of town. If I had left it where it was I would be working on it almost every day ![]() In any event, I sent it to Chris, my local guru, and he set the ride height, changed the tranny oil, and adjusted carbs etc. It runs like a scalded cat now. It is really strong up to 5k, and then all hell breaks loose. The seats are installed but I have yet to install the interior. Water is leaking into the car all over the place so front and rear glass is coming back out. I will tackle that this week and have a couple of tricks up my sleeve. I'll post those as I go so that others can try them if they like.

Here is something else that I added to mine. I am not sure if it is even necessary but it is a similar thing that you see at the rear, so I added a bolt-on support strut at the front of the flare.

Here is a historic reference picture for you along with your car. I think your measurements are probably ok.

Thanks for the pic. So I took your advice and mounted/fitted the bumper. Def looks right now. Had to take a 1/4 inch or so out in a few places to get the right fitment. Tomorrow is going to be a long fiberglass day ... I dont miss working with glass .. it sucks. I am going to use the rear lower bumper stanchions for some extra rigidity. I am also going to glass in a bolt into the fender on the inside to attach
before ... ![]() ![]() ![]() after ... it. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

That looks good. I like the perfect fit that you accomplished!
A tip for you regarding fibreglass. When I have a seam to fill like the one that you have when you made your cuts, I get some metal foil tape. I use one strip shiny side facing the outer surface of the bumper, and then hold it in place with more tape, this time peeling and sticking it to the bumper, overlapping the first piece. The idea is to create an outer mold using the tape. Then, when you add glass to the inside surface, it leaves the outer surface relatively smooth, with not much finishing work to do. When it hardens, remove the tape. THe resin doesn't stick to the shiny side, and if it does get stuck, just remove it with a power sander. You could also use wax paper and regular tape I suppose, but I like the stiffness of the thin metal foil tape like is used for home heating systems

Here is my current setup for the rear where the bumper meets the flare. I may refine it after I see how you do yours.
(Note: in the second picture you can see a bolt used to hang the bumper off the tail light opening. Don;t do that. The previous owner had it mounted that way but not only is that piece of metal not strong enough to support it, but it is also in the way and there are better ways. The pic below was an early stage mock up picture. The tube support is what I am trying to show). ![]() ![]() I think yours looks really good now.
