opinions: aero 993 mirrors on a RS backdate?
I know what most will say, Hell NO!! but wanted to see what others think about putting a pr of aero 993 mirrors on a 72 RS backdate project. has it been done and what do you think? is it time to put a helmet on now (for my bashing)??

Yes it has been done. I've seen a few pictures on Pelican of cars set up this way. They may be in the Random 911 pics thread.
Personally I wouldn't do it, but then some folks probably wouldn't run a 935 mirror on a widebody backdate either. I say do whatever you like! They would be a much better option vs. SC style flag mirrors that's for sure! |

I agree, slicker than flag mirrors. Visually, the key will be how wide the RS backdate is. If it's a narrow body car, they'll stick out like Alfred E. Newman's ears. If the car has some flare (even SC / Carrera flare) they'll look a little more appropriate. Rockers and wide wheels / tires will help with that visual balance as well.

I do too - on your 964 style car. They're my mirror of choice on impact bumper cars.
On a pre-impact bumper longhood...not so much. Again though that's just my opinion. On a longhood style car my preferences include '73 or earlier stock mirrors, Vitaloni (sp?) style mirrors, or 935 mirrors. All 3 or which require welding up the holes left by SC flag mirrors during a backdate. |

its not an rs backdate either mr. short hood :-)
love that car though! Why do you want to do those mirrors? The repro mirrors look just as good/better and are cheaper. Functionally/quality wise the OEM 993 mirrors are probably better??? Are the 935 mirrors the ones that go in the corner of the wing window? for a really racy looking car those looks good and different...still sorta period correct. I think a big consideration is Chrome...if you are going with chrome window frames and trim the 74 chrome flags (or 73 if you can find any) are a must. If you are going black trim not so important (IMHO).

havent decided on chrome or black trim yet but Ive got a pair of aero mirrors on the shelf as well as factory 73 drivers mirror. thats one of those slippery slopes cause go chrome then my 930S steering wheel and electric window RS door panels and black script sport seats (84 manual) wont look right. if I stay black then other iterior mods wont be as noticably out of place. ahh dilemas!!! I am adding the 72 oil system incase that matters in helping me decide. once the mind is made up, she goes to paint so here we go!!

My vote is for the '73 stock mirror and chrome exterior trim. Change the interior stuff down the road when you run out of projects! |

The biggest PITA is the window frames...lotsa time to get those shiny. Also door handles..arrgh.
The front and rear window trim is not too bad to strip if you are not going for concours or buy new.

I had a pair of aero mirrors on my longhood and loved them.....the view out of each was great and they looked attractive.
However, when I converted it to a RS replica, I took them off and replaced them with the single, little '73 mirror on the driver's side because I wanted that additional bright-work to go with the bright-dipped anodized trim and the polished petals on the Fuchs. I love this look now that it is done....but I do miss having that passenger side mirror when I'm getting ready to change lanes....the round talbot mirrors might be a nicer option. But I have heard that even they do not provide good view-functionality on the passenger side. |

Not the best of pics, but modern mirrors do not work on an older car. Here's my '73 with the good 'ol single silver mirror.

Had you considered the vitaloni mirrors? I like this one myself. It is period correct, but not as bulky as the flag.

Thank you!
And....more period correct than the red sparcos! One day, they'll be covered in black faux suede. Doug

I bought the Better Bodies mirrors for the race car and while the "fit and look" is good the mechanism is junk. The mirror glass adjuster was sloppy on both and I already had one mirror (and the piece I glued it to) fly off into the wind during a race. On top of that the swivel section (where the mirror head mounts to the base) is loose also now, have to take the remaining one off to see if I can tighten it somehow but I doubt it as the whole thing is fiberglass with no steel thread inserts from what I can see.
