Thanks guys.

The transmission is a G50/01 with a limited slip. The previous owner said it was freshly rebuilt but we found that not to be the case. So moral of that story is, have your parts inspected prior to purchase!

I sent it off to California Motorsports for the short bell housing conversion (SBH). They also freshened up the internals of the transmission, installed the billet side plate, and shortened the bell housing and input shaft. They are a fantastic group of guys, very thorough with all their work!

I believe they take 28mm of the bell housing which still leaves room for a 76-77 style 930 clutch instead of the dual mass 87+ clutch assembly. This does NOT mean everything will bolt up with no problems!

I really did not want to modify the torsion tube and the new motor/trans combo is longer than the stock unit so it will push the motor backwards approximately 3/4". More on that later....

Another item that needs to be addressed is the hydraulic supply line to the slave cylinder. It needed to be a different length but we were able to take the stock line to a hydraulic fitting shop and they put in a longer hard line to make up the difference in length. Pretty easy and inexpensive.

John Walker was nice enough to loan me an old mag case for mock up fitting, and also supplied me with a bunch of the odds and ends needed for the G50 swap... Thanks John!!!

Upon fitting, it was confirmed that the motor would be moved toward the rear of the car by 3/4". We modified the stock engine mount bar to accommodate for this change.

I have not finished modifying the transmission mount but I will used the stock 915 mount and modify that to raise the G50 to the needed height and also clear the stock sway bar. I'll post photos of that setup when it is completed.

amazing work! thank you for sharing!

That engine mount looks nice and strong. Not pretty, but definitely strong. ;)

Fitting the transmission with the motor mount and transmission mounts in place. Everything fits perfect!

I can smell some 3rd gear tire smoke in your future!

cnielsen 11-13-2015 08:04 AM

At least the transmission can handle it!

Chris. I wanna be just like u when I grow up. :)

I'm doing the same type backdate on my 87 g50 car and have a 87 3.3 to chg out the 3.2 with bolt ons like turbo intercooler cams exhaust. Still collecting stuff. I'd buy any go faster stuff u have left over as discussed via pms. Doing a great job. Love that motor mount idea. Cheers mate.

Bergo 12-17-2015 09:23 AM

love it. any updates? building a big NA motor? going turbo?

cnielsen 12-18-2015 07:13 AM

Sorry, no updates. We had some hang ups with the motor so I'll keep details secret for now ;)

In the mean time, energy has been focused on prepping my 69S for paint. No thread on that one yet...

[QUOTE=cnielsen;8871716]Then the shift coupler wont work in it's stock configuration. Patrick Motorsports used to make a lengthened one for use on the short bell housing (SBH) G-50 but they don't offer it anymore. So we had to modify the stock one and the length needed is yet to be determined but we had an idea so I cut the coupler in half and welded in some aluminum bar on both sides. I initially welded one side, that way I could slide the two halves to the desired length and then do the final weld on the other half.

Chris,
i'm just catching up on your project. Your shift coupler, slider/length idea is really great. i love that kind of stuff...great diy solution.

regards,
al

cnielsen 12-18-2015 08:35 PM

Thanks Al, it wasn't planned that way but after I cut it in half and scratched my head a few times, it became the obvious solution.

Chris,

I am working on the same project. My first.

Bought a lot from PM but am getting weary of the prices. The adapter mount is $485!!

I have a stock 915 mount. It looks like you used only one set of spacers. Is that correct?

The spacers look pretty thick - about 1/4"?

I assume that you welded the spacers in place and elongated the holes through the mounts.

Am I missing anything?

Thanks in advance,
Mike

...and PM wasn't even selling the parts when I needed them.

I used 3/16" steel plate with elongated holes. It was a little tricky to get it all lined up in the car but once we got a couple tack welds on the plate, we removed the trans mount and elongated the holes in the 915 mount to match those on the plate.

Thanks Chris!
Your build thread has been a great help.

Especially for a novice.

Wow, that car is gorgeous!!!! Those seats are beautiful! I'm just starting a 68 912 and I'm eventually going to have to paint it, initially I was planning on going original (ivory/ black int) but your color combo is dead sexy!!

I've got to hand it to you guys who take years on this cars, I don't have that kind of patience. Obviously it seems worth the time judging by that car.....just simply stunning.

cnielsen 03-27-2016 09:48 PM

Still anxiously awaiting the motor. We changed directions a bit and cosequently the time schedule changed, but I should be bolting the motor in the car within a couple weeks!

In the mean time, I refinished a set of 951 8x16's and 930 9x16's. Tonight was a good opportunity to do some fine line masking for the satin black inserts.

Chris. How did u refinish the britework part of the rims? They look anodized. Good work.

cnielsen 03-28-2016 08:35 AM

Polish, media blast and finished with a clear anodize.

cnielsen 03-28-2016 07:34 PM

...and finally paint
