Seems to me a thirty year old plate is just the kind of thing that gives them an excuse to pull you over because it's something they don't know a thing about. Not worth the potential hassle in my opinion.
Your required to have proof of a daily driver??

In MD they don't care, any car 20 and over can get historic tags and are exempt from all inspections and emissions

I have my 1986 930 registered as an antique in PA. No emissions, no inspections, and few limitations. Only downside is a really ugly plate!
PA legislature passed a 'year of plate' law last spring. Just checked and its fully implemented now.

Costs $75 to switch from the ugly model T plate to a year of issue, but you have to provide the plate. I found one stashed in the garrage and plan to upgrade soon.

Check out this arcive to find the right plate for your car. Rick Kretschmer's License Plate Archives – Pennsylvania Passenger Cars 1958-Present

Looks like my 81sc will sport a mustard yellow 'keystone state' plate this spring, in time for Hershey.

Got one in CT!

Best move ever. No inspections or limitations. Helps with insurance and the state is only allowed to tax $500 vehicle value...that's right!

Last week I paid CT my 78 911 taxes...$9.18.

Only downfall...5 character with a space, 6 without on plate.

I have Rhode Island antique plates, $10 per year, no inspection or emission required. They have pretty severe driving limitations but I drive mine every day during the summer and have never been stopped. You're only supposed to drive the car to parades, car shows or to the repair shop. If I ever get stopped I'll just tell the cop that I'm on my way to the shop! I'd love to paint an old 356 over the silly Model T on the plate.

Mine is registered as Historic in DC. One-time inspection (no emissions) and a normal-looking license plate. No restrictions on use either!

I choose not to do it here in NJ. The restrictions are too restrictive, I like to commute one or two days a week. I'm insured by Leland West insurance with a policy that covers occasional commuting. I still need to go through emission inspection every two years but have never had a problem passing.

Finally registered my '84 track car as historic in VA. VA started allowing personal tag's and it is nice to be able to do some testing prior to going to the track. Had regular registration before . But safety inspectors (annual in VA) didn't like the door bars and track seats much.

Hi all,you guys have it great in the US for rego, here in Queensland, Australia I pay $886.00 Au ($930.00 Us) per year to keep my 69 Targa on the black stuff, only way out is to join a car club here, stipulations are
Must have been registered as club member for minimum 12 months
Car must be over 30 years old.
Can only drive to club events(no workshops, fuel etc...)and must apply AND display permit for club run.
A letter from club president (who is registered with the Transport dept.) after 12 months (no driving the car in that time frame on club rego)stating your 12 month membership completion to apply at transport Dept for club rego.($450.00 Au for 1 year)
Yes they have made it so hard that you give in and pay standard rego cost above.
Oh you must attend EVERY car club meeting in the first 12 months to comply ,and to top it all off the only car club here that is recognised by the transport Dept is the ALL AMERICAN CAR CLUB and does not accept membership from any other make, you would think that my 911 is LHD and imported from the USA would make some headway,No Go,I can`t blame them to want to keep it that way ,beatiful car collection. So give a thought for us Aussies getting slugged every which way to keep a car on the road.
Regards BL Oz

I'm in NY, have the old orange and blue vintage plates, my first plates! Registration is annual, I have Hagerty, excellent to work with, no complaints... Still need an annual inspection (tax), NY is a joke... Why do we live here?

The plates must be original, no repros...

In NY do historical vehicles need annual inspection or just annual tag renewals ? Do they check emissions on historics?

I registered my '70 911T in NY last year with historic plates as historic vehicle.

Plates have to be original and epriod correct to the year of your car - including sticker, as stated above, must not be repainted (although the DMV only wants to see a photo of the plates, so some of the retailers for refurbished plates on the net offer photos of the unrestored plates with them which should work). one can find plates easily on the bay or specialized vendor sites.

Annual inspection, no emissions, pretty straight forward.

Number combination of the historic plates needs to be free which can be looked up at the NY DMV. (click here for DMV link)The section on historic license plates says it all effectively. Pack everything in an envelope, send to Albany DMV, wait two weeks and you have the registration in the mail.

Historic plates look.... period correct

Sounds good!

You ever get questions from the cops on account of the old plates?

Not so far.
Put some 3,000 miles on the last summer and autumn and was only stopped once in a general check for seat belts... Did not even mention me only having my rear license plate on...

Hugo, What are the restrictions? A 79 is eligible for antique plates, like my 69 & 72, and no state inspection is required. I don't know of any restrictions, and if there are any, they don't enforce them. When I worked in corporate USA, I drove the Targa to work a couple of times per week during the summer, on Rt 78, and never had a problem. Nor with the coupe in fall and early spring. I'm insured with JC Taylor who also allows occasional commutes.

supposed to only be driven for exhibition and educational purposes. i couldn't find any specific definition of those purposes. any time i drive my 87 to work, it's to show someone the car.
