Moving my 911 sideways in my garage

I do not use my 911 much. According to my wife it is an absolute waste of space in our garage. Even tough I have to agree in principle, in practice there is no way I will sell it or park it outside.

A compromise could be to park it differently. I have 5 feet of space to the right of my car. Could anyone of you suggest a practical way to move the car to the right so that I could move the car to that empty space?

I cannot move it using the engine as there is not enough space to maneuver. The only possibility would be to use some kind of device that would lift the car and drop it 5 feet further to the right.

I only read this thread because I wanted to know how fast you were going to get sideways in the garage.

There are little wheely things that go under the wheels to move cars sideways. Ask Wayne. I think he uses them.

Denis,

Get a good sized floor jack (Harbor Freight, costco, sams, or such) and put it under the rear of the car in the center. Get several people to push it using the wheels of the jack to pivet it around.

This is how most of the garages do it.

Done it lots of times. That's why floor jacks have steel wheels.

Denis, either the jack method or a little-known messy trick used by parking garages... oil between the tire and the ground.. works wonders...

Good luck

Oil between the tire and ground? How much oil does it take to accomplish that ????

We also have the version that "zuerchers" posted the picture of. I just have not added them to the site yet. They run 120.00 for 4 of the above Car Dollies. Cheap and get the job done.

Don,

Whats the weight rating on these puppies? The unit pictured in the above post is not the same as the one on your site.

I have a heavy Jag to move from time to time!

Thx,

Joe

Moving my 911 sideways in my garage

The wheel dolly looks very attractive. Can you explain how it is operated? I have looked on the manufacturer web site indicated on the Pelican product page but cannot find it.

With such a dolly, could I move my 911 alone or would I need help from a 2nd or 3rd person?

The dolly in Wayne's link has a ratcheting mechanism and rollers. You place it around the tire and then work the lever to lift the tire off the ground. To use the dollies in "zuerchers" photo you have to lift the car with a floor jack to get the dolly under the tire. Less convenient but a fraction of the price. One person can easily move a car if the floor is clean and smooth. On a tile floor it take more effort to stop the car from rolling than to get it started.

Hi Joe,
They have a 6000 lb capacity., 3 sizes (8x16, 12x16, and 16x16 for you viper guys) they are made from 1/4 steel plate with ball bearing casters. The 8x16 size in a set of 4 will run $119.00 and the 12x16 will getcha for $140.00 plus shipping. Not Bad !
I can take a pic if you would like one.
Hope this helps,
Don

Ha...I had the same problem two days ago. With ease, me and two friends picked up the rear of the car...scooted it over about 6 ft...and then repeated the operation in the front. Where there's a will, there is always a way. In no way, shape or form am I recommending this, but it can be done.

With a bit of gumption, I've always been able to get the car where I need it with whatever I have on hand.

I'ts much more fun, however, to move the car sideways while you're driving it.

oh...ow. It makes me cringe when I hear things like that. I've heard several people say that.

The way I got around that type of thinking is I gave the keys to the 911 to my wife when I bought it. I also planned the purchase around her birthday. Now it's "her birthday present" and I still drive it.

She loves the car and wouldn't trade it for anything now.

Go to harbour freight and get there furniture dolly. They are rated for about 600 lbs but i have used them to move my 944 many times. All four are about $80 put one under each wheel and you're good to go.
