Good luck!
I have a 49-state 99 Miata bought from a Bay area used car dealer - passed Ok

a year later it came up for smog test & failed due to visual - no CARB tag on the header which had previously been OK'd as exempt 'cuz it was a 49-stete car

- cost me $600 for replacement manifold parts to make it CARB legal, not to mention the labor & testing fees

as above - FIND a Porsche shop that has a friendly relationship with a SMOG Test guy that will listen to them for "advice"

- then every 2 yrs go back to the same outfit - just pay the money

problem is that the CA rules get changed during every legislative session

- the BAR clean air anti vehicle bicycle rider crowd wants all our cars off the road

so 2 yrs from now your car might get scrutiny against new rules that it previously was not required originally to meet

lately - we are seeing complaints from 3.2 carerra owners that their cars are not passing - even tho they passed for yrs b'4

yeah - keep it registered in ME if you can - the only risk to that is if the CHP catches you doing 135 on the 405 some night and you have a CA drivers License & a ME car in the exact same name

that's why my Porsche is reg in NV

.

2019-30 = 1989 .
So is it correct that 1989 and before are smog exempt ?

No. It's never going to pass. That ship sailed some years ago when the Governator killed it. As for your 79SC, it has to have all original smog equipment (smog pump too) to pass visual, and has to be in tune to pass tail pipe. If it does not pass, the sky is the limit for the repair. There is no cap for someone moving into the state.

There is also a Historical license plate program here, but the car has to pass smog first (if it is 76 or later years)

Just tidbits:
- I had an 83 SC that passed smogged everytime. After I moved away from CA I had the exhaust redone for more power...the mechanic commented my Cats were completely gutted all along. I had no idea. Yet the car passed every time. That suggest to me in good tune they are not that dirty, or the mechanics can make them pass with little effort.

- There are shops that will not look too hard for SMOG equipment. Or so I've heard.

- That said, I chose to leave that car behind when I moved back to CA (might have been a mistake, moving back and leaving the car) because they *are* annoying... My rule here is Pre 75 or modern. Nothing in between.
