Great thread. A few weeks back I brought home my 76 2.7S with 10k on a full rebuild. She runs perfect and is not a DD but I can't help but take her to the office a few times a week. (Its a simple equation 911>Mazda). With that said, at what point do I get over my phobia that is just going to blow up? I ve had this same phobia with all my old BMWs/Air-cooled VWs and none of them ever left me stranded or broke.
I want to just sit back and enjoy it but I have OCD issues and its proving impossible to just enjoy it. Am I alone?

I used to worry that some drunk would wipe out my car. Thing is, why leave it in the garage?
I used my '71 as my daily driver (except in the rain) for over 30 years. Now we are both retired.

In other words, turn your OCD the other way. You MUST drive 50 miles a week, minimum! ![]() (Daily driven SC, with none of the typical CIS issues you read about on the forum.) |

I guess it comes down to why do you own something? With rare exceptions, these cars are not good investments.
Personally, I'm gonna try to get every last penny's worth of driving joy out of mine. And when it needs it, like it does now, I will get joy out of repairing and modifying it to find or create even more driving joy.

Faster
I drive my 84 daily. In the winter it just barely reaches operating temperature on the way to work if I don't take the long way around. On Saturdays I run 170 miles of highway, and the car and I both love it. You do have to control that little voice that says "Faster, faster, faster!"

Just bought my 89 this year. I drive it on weekends and 1or 2 or maybe 3 times to work a week depending on weather. I also have a BMW 530 and a BMW motorcycle I like to use. The other limitation for me is AC - I won't drive the 911 when it is 90 degrees - just don't enjoy it. And I won't drive it in the rain if it has recently been washed. Call me a lightweight but why drive it in the rain of you have an AWD Bimmer?
That said, i will end up putting 5,000 miles on the P car before it goes into winter storage (no way it will see the salted roads we have in the Midwest). So, I feel I get good use out of it. I see you live in Texas - I think the only potential issue to drive an old 911 would be AC. Personally, I would either get an older Porsche and have an all new, modern AC systen installed or buy a 964/993/996. Texas gets mighty warm.

I do. Been my driver for 2 years now. I've had my share of issues with the car, but nothing too bad. At this point I am still happy with her and would be willing to continue to spend money on her to keep her running well enough.
I don't drive her in the winters here in VT, I walk to work during the winter.

Same as everyone else. Drive my 74 nearly every day to work and around town. About the only time it sits is when something else is out of the garage.

Drive my 83 RoW SC daily when there is no snow. Fun, gets attention, gives me a chance to take the long way home after work. Got-to-love it.

I've had my Targa for a little less than a year, and am driving it way more than I had expected; basically every day it's not raining hard. So far 6,000 miles. The reason is that I had no idea how enjoyable the car would be. Can't keep away from it! Knock on wood, it is running great. Being in Seattle, if it ever breaks I'll just have it towed to John Walker's fun workshop!

The only time I dont drive mine on daily basis is during the heat of the summer. Wearing coat and tie is much easier with GM air conditioner in the GTO. The weather is just now pleasant in the 911 until the snow/ice stuff begins(it never happened last year)

1980 SC Coupe
When I first got this car over 15 years ago, it was my daily driver. About 4-5 years ago the engine developed a major oil leak and as a result was driven less. Now, I have just finished a major engine rebuild and it will go back into being more of a daily driver. Too much fun to let it sit in the garage!

I take the old gal (1973.5T) out every friday for a run (weather permitting) in north Atlanta. These older 911's are great drivers and need exercise!
