My luck ran out......

a

Finally had a car break on the road that I couldn't get home.

Top out son and I cruising down the highway 60mph and it dies.

I replaced the DME relay, but no goodness.

Have already search and am making the jumpers to start testing. After reading up on the problem, I remember getting a whiff of electrical burning while driving. I thought it was a truck in front of us (might just have been my imagination).

I will update my findings as I go.

Good news the rebuilt engine is using about 1qt of oil per 1K miles, and drives better than it ever has with new Continental tires.

Had the same thing happen on the way back from Hershey. Turned out to be the CDI. I ended up installing an MSD Streetfire along with their coil. Warren

I did visually check the fuses and they all looked good.

I was able to turn the engine over and it would stumble a little and then cut off. I'm leaning towards fuel for now. I did hear the fuel pump whining about a month ago, but it went away.

Looking at fuses is NOT enough, take it out and look at them, sometimes they fall apart when you touch them yet look ok.

Might be ECU related if you smelled burning.

Should start a thread called "flatbed" not to be gruesome. Mine has only ridden once when the Voltage Regulator went bad and overheated the battery, boiled it driving me to the side of the road coughing from acid fumes. Was pre "smart phone with camera". That was a full day replacing the VR in the parking lot of a La Quinta, luckily in shade.

Is the fuel pump relay a suspect on the 3.2's as with the 3.0's?

Also, ganun is talking sense on the fuses. Find the fuel pump fuse and double check with extreme prejudice (stealing a movie line).

I started testing this morning. I made a jumper for the DME relay and turned on the fuel pump. I hear a click when I turn my toggle switch on but no hum from the pump.

I don't have a pressure gauge so I just removed the cap from the test port and turned the pump on again, all I get is a dribble of gas.

Since the car was running fine and then died could the fuel filter have stopped up suddenly?

Bob, the fuel pump relay is 1/2 of the DME relay. There is no standard fuel pump relay like the SC have on a Carrera. It is built into the infamous DME relay.

In the 18 years I have had my 911 the one time the DME relay started giving me problems it was like it was trying to warn me. It would cutoff for a moment and then keep running. I swapped the DME relay and all was fine. I got lucky.

Go methodically:

- Ignition to ON and verify the ICV is vibrating
- Crank and check fuel pump is running while cranking (DVM on fuse)
- Verify you get spark when cranking (old plug against engine GND or inline tester)
- Verify you get fuel (negative test: spray starter fluid into intake, or NOID light)

Ingo, what is the ICV?

I installed the fuel pump and the filter and she started right up. I now have a miss/bucking every now and again.

I had that issue after the rebuild, but I thought it was trash in the fuel. When I changed the fuel filter it went away.

I'm thinking I may have fouled plug(s) due to me trying to crank it over and over.

Will disconnecting the battery cause this?

ICV is idle control valve. Keeps idle speed constant, but probably doesn't have anything to do with your miss. I had a miss that turned out to be a bad ground. I've also had it miss when the battery wasn't fully charged from a defective alternator, so you might check that all your electrical grounds are clean and tight and that battery voltage when running is good. IIRC it should be 13.5 to 14.0.

Happens to the best of us
Mine died on the road, thought it was the fuel pump, swapped it out and got it running again..... Only to have it randomly die again in another drive after about 16 hours on the road. I'm now getting the CDI rebuilt. Fingers crossed.
